Recommend a recording of Bach please?

Posted by: BarryD on 09 April 2006

20 plus years ago a friend of mine had a (vinyl) recording of '4 concertos for flute et clavecin' (harpsicord?) by J S Bach - played by Jean Pierre Rampal, which I very much enjoyed. I was reminded of this by hearing a flautist playing one of the pieces in the Park Guell last week.

Getting to the point... can anyone recommend a good, currently available, CD version of this music?

thanks, Barry

Dear Barry,

Have you looked to see if JP Rampal's performances are still available? Probably on Erato, who seem to have many fine slightly older performances still available.

JP Rampal is a lovely artist.

Otherwise you will need to hunt out BWV numbers to make a lot of sense of your request for help.

All the best from Fredrik

Not sure if these are the pieces you're looking for, but even if not, you should definitely have this:

Michala Petri - recorder, Keith Jarrett - harpsichord

I really love these sonatas on the wooden recorder as opposed to the modern metal transverse flute.

And if you like this album, check out their companion album of Handel's recorder sonatas.

Or on the wooden traverso,
Brüggen / Leonhardt (Sony),
Hazelzet / Bouman (DG) or
Preston / Pinnock (CRD).

Thanks for your replies which kindly refrained from saying that I had listened to sonatas, not concertos.
I've ordered the Handel by Petri and Jarrett, and found a more recent Rampal recording of the Bach sonatas.
