Charity Shop Heaven
Posted by: Shayman on 08 January 2003
Yesterday I had one of those once in a blue moon scenarios whilst browsing my local charity shop.
In my teens I was a fan of the Wedding Present and in fact they were the first band I ever went to see. I've got two of their albums and a couple of cassette singles which have been well played over the years.
Imagine my delight on entering Cancer Research yesterday to find literally the entire back catalogue of the Gedgey et al. from 1984 to 1991 on vinyl. All the singles were 12" and there was even the Peel Sessions album and the Ukranian sessions 10". £20 or so later I emerged a happy man.
Just thought I'd smugly share this near religious experience with the forum.
Anyone have any similar "I can't beleive what I've just found in my local second hand vinyl outlet" stories?

A few years ago (1994, I think) I was browsing in a Cancer esearch shop in Kent when, nestling among the usual piles of solo LPs by members of Yes, I found a copy of the Beatles' "Let It Be" box and book (the LP was missing) for a mere £10! More extraordinary still, both box and book were in near-mint condition!!!
I gave 'em £30 for it, took it home and slotted in my copy of the album (not an original pressing, I hasten to add). One of my best bargains ever!

I can beat these.
A couple of years ago I bought a box of Pop Tarts for breakfast. Imamgine my surprise when, on hearing the toaster go ping, Patsy Kensit popped up!

4 good ones to-day from local Charity shops
Sade Diamond Life
ZZ Top Afterburner
Joe Jackson Night and Day
Tears for Fears Songs from the Big Chair
All exelent slight surface noise very few ticks, good sleeves and all for £4.49. plus Tori Amos 4 track CD £1.50. The records were cheaper and better than one of the recent purchases from a specialist s-hand vinyl store marked as near mint.

I found two early Little Feat albums in great condition. Three early Fleetwood mac that have cleaned up nicely tho I wish they had better sound reproduction, kinda thin. Joni and Tears for Fears, Big Chair. All just for a few bucks each.

Phil
Tori Amos CD is Silent All These Years.Just looked on ebay you were right lots of silly prices. Mind that particular CD comes in about 3 different versions and even different names(same tracks).

I found a mint copy of the blues alone by Mayell, original pressing I believe in a charity shop in Devon.
Well chuffed.
Are we agreed that the two most common charity albums are Phil Collins Face Value and The Sound Of Music?

ha, ha, ha!
I've discussed this with people before! Every single charity sjop record section I've ever been to has had The SOund Of Music. Neil diamond and, as you say, Phil Collins also feature evry time in some form or other.
James Last's piss poor cover versions are also universally available

Damn, I was hoping to unload my extensive JL collection on e-bay at a large profit
Did pick up a Mahler 6 (Kubelik/BRSO) and a Berlioz Harold in Italy (Bernstein/NYP)for 2 quid last week though.
