REL STRATA QUESTION

Posted by: bigtrak on 04 January 2003

Hi
I am contemplating investing in a Rel Strata Sub after reading various posts on this forum.
My qustion is do you have to manually adjust the volume of the Sub depending on what volume you have your main amps at, or does it do it automatically?
Cheers

Suppose you connect them to your speaker outputs, it goes automatically.

I used to run a REL sub from Naim amps with SBL's. You need to connect the sub's input lead to the speaker outlets somehow.

Richard Lord designed it this way, so that the sub is being fed the same 'character' of bass as your main speakers.

You then adjust the overall relative gain and filter point of the sub to personal taste. The trick (if you're using it with music) is to keep it subtle, with the filter point as low as possible.

It will then do wonders for the soundstage and sense of 'acoustic' in the mid and high frequencies.

Good luck.

I had a Strata II with a pair of Tukans for about a year and half.

Just make sure that you have the Strata running off of an output that varies with your volume control: either a preamp output, or your amp's speaker output. Don't use the tape out as it's independent of the volume control.

The Strata is an excellent sub for the money; you can't go wrong. As said above, don't over-use it. You'll probably end up running it at the lowest or next lowest crossover point, and at a surprisingly low volume.

Cheers

Keith.
