nait 3 price / home cinema setup.

-thinking of using one in a home cinema setup with just 2 speakers rather than a 5.1 system - anybody done this, is it better than a el cheapo yamaha amp and speakers and also whats the s/h price of a nait 3 (about 6 years old...) - will be using with either epos 14's or kan 1's whichever sounds best....
many thanks - gus

I got my NAIT3 (no phonos, but mint and boxed) for £260 - which is slightly high, but low in relation to Epay (and a fair price in reality since I got a Chord Cobra in with it).

I use one with a Yamaha E800 DPL/DD/DTS processor to good effect - it's much more dynamic than the Rega Mira 2000 I had previously, and sounds fine with films. With the processor in "effect off" mode, so it's just producing a stereo channel using the inbuilt DAC, the NAIT still sounds damn good.

It won't drive ES14s properly though - my Rega Mira 2000 wouldn't drive these properly and I reckon the Naim will also struggle... My Audiodrab 8000A I leant my mate just about works but it's still flat sounding - though that might be the amp itself or the crappy DVD he's using as a CD source...

cheers dom - back to the drawing board then i guess! i might just have to make do with a extra set of leads going to a 102/hi/180 in another room and swap them over when i need to - what speakers are you using out of interest?

What's the purpose of using a surround processor in a 2 channel setup? I have the audio from my DVD player going to the television and then use the fixed out from the TV to my Nait 2. It sounds great!

I have recently thrown out (sold of) my Denon/B&W 5.0 setup and since yesterday I'm using a Nait 2 with my quarter of a century old LS3/5A:s. Much better! On DVD (crap Pioneer thing) one now even get something remisenent of PRaT, Nicam is still uninteresting, but that's the source, not the amp. One interesting thing is that the non Nicam TV-channels (that means mono in my case) now sounds comparably much better.

Go the 2 channel way, Gus!
