CD and LP storage

Problem: 1000 cds and about the same no of LP's requiring a home...
Has anyone in the Surrey area (or generally SE) commissioned a bespoke storage system (I'd be more pleased to go to Ikea however we live in an old house and can't make normal furniture fit). What I'd like is drawers for cds to be built (and hidden) in a couple of alcoves either side of a fireplace. The LP's can just sit on shelves in said alcoves.
Any ideas?

Treat CDs like LPs: i.e., they can sit on shelves in the alcoves. You can put in sheleves easily enough, and custom tailor the separation height to the CDs you have (that way you don't end up with an assumption that you only ever get jewel cases).
Nothing fancy reqired, just a plank of wood across the alcove with sections of the same stuff screwed to the wall to provide support.
Pete.

Hi,
I'm in the Surrey area and use Ikea units for LP and CD. The Benno CD tower is great for CD's and they do a wide range of towers suitable for vinyl storage.

We already have shelves (behind doors) in the alcoves. The problem is that the alcoves are some 2ft deep. Having a row of cd's on a shelf wastes the 18" space in front of them. I'm looking for some drawer based system whereby all the available space is used?

I have just commissioned a storage rack for my LPs from a cabinet maker friend.
It is just a three-shelf box with two dividers (for strength) so it is effectively nine pigeon holes.
It's 33in wide to fit in a space between two other items and has 13.5inches height in between shelves. It is all dovetail jointed and will be stained to match other furniture in my lounge.
I'm guessing it will take about 600 LPs (but that is just a guess). My wife has told me the lounge will only be allowed to store as many records as the unit takes and all others will have to retire to the study or garage.
My friend said he would be happy to build whatever I want, to whatever design I choose, so I would imagine he could do the same for you.
Mine will be ready by the end of March and I'll try to post a picture on the forum when it arrives.
Cost? Well, I think (and hope) I'm getting "mate's rates" for a bespoke piece of quality furniture. I'm paying £285.
I think that compares quite favourably. I've seen quite nice shelving in John Lewis for £450 and that would not have been a great match for the rest of our wood and it wouldn't have been an exact fit to the space we needed.
I've got about 500 CDs in Ikea shelf units and while they are okay, they are not fantastic pieces of furniture. But they are cheap.
You pays your money . . .
My friend is in Horsham, so, depending on where abouts you are in Surrey, that might be convenient.
If it's any help I can put you in contact with him.
Cheers
Tony

Stewart,
The URL you provided doesn't seem to work. This could be firewall related (I'm at work!) - could you just verify it for me?

try using the URL as typed, rather than as in the HTML where the 's' is missing and there is a full stop on the end
