I'm not very up on male vocalists in this style, but if you'd like to try some female vocalists then you could try albums by Basia Bulat (Oh My Darling), Mary Chapin Carpenter (Hometown Girl), Laura Cantrell (Tremblin Kind) and Lucinda Williams (Car Wheels).
If you want some classic folk then try Shirley Collins (Sweet Primroses or Folk Roots New Roots).
I'm going by your thread title as I'm not really familiar with the artists you list.

Try Tim O' Brien, Handsome Family and first couple of Peter Case albums (if you can track his early stuff down). Chris Hillman's last effort was very, very good as I remember.

Freddie Stevenson, Brett Dennen & Willy Mason would be my variation on a folk theme. All relatively new artists but stunning debut albums in the one man and his guitar space.
Enjoy......
Enjoy......

Try Eric Taylor and Steve Young. Taylor is in Nanci Griffths eyes the best songwriter that Texas ever produced. Steve Young is a giant among singer songwriters but his discs are hard to come by. Youngs early stuff is country but his later discs are more along the lines you are looking for. Some of his discs are considered to be among the best in that genre.
Terry Allen and Tom Russell possibly the latter rather than the former.
Of course Jim's suggestion of Townes is also highly recommended.
One other guy finally I thoroughly recommend just for his wonderful lyrics is Dan Reeder who currently records for Prine's Oh Boy label.
But one you have to get is Guy Clark especially Old No1 one of the best singer song writes albums ever to come out of Texas.

Nanci was married to Eric Taylor from 1979 to 1980. He appears on her first two albums as well as on her live album One Fair Summer Evening, and she appears on his 1981 album Shameless Love.
I saw Eric Taylor in a tiny venue in Newcastle (about 20 people there) and he was crackin' stood outside at the break recounting stories while having a fag.
Bleak music tho (even for me

Townes Van Zandt plays on this and many others as you say. There is a DVD of the disc as well, is the cd worth buying? In a recent hifi+ mag they were rating the sound quality very highly.

Dunno I'm afraid, I was referring to the DVD but the music is fantastic so I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the CD.

Quite hillbilly with some beautiful songs, particularly Grandaddy and Dogwood Winter........
Seen Slaid a couple of times and he is a straight forward singer songwriter with a country edge to his songs. The song Lydia could break even the stoniest heart..................
Female singer songwriter with mellow tunes, not too heavy on the Country.......gorgeous non the less.................................

Check out Guy Clark, Jesse Winchester, Betty Elders "Peaceful Existence" and Pierce Pettis. Many hours of listening enjoyment there.
