cd5 pickup upgrade and cdrw

Posted by: stv on 21 July 2003

I was wondering if anyone had upgraded their cd5 lately and then been able to play cdrw disks?

I have a marantz dr6000 cd rewriter and want my cd5 to play the cdrw's but so far have not been able to get it to read them. I w3as told that the pickup upgrade would make it compatible.

Also i was wondering if the make and type of cdrw may have an impact?

thanks

I think there may be some confusion here. The PIC upgrade enables players to read non-standard audio discs outside of the Redbook standard such as those with copy-protection. It won't enable the players to read CD-RWs unless they were originally designed to do so.

This means that only players with the very latest laser mechs (CDX2, CDS3) can replay CD-RWs.

i think the main problem with cdrw's is that the toc is written in a different place to normal cd's and finalised cd-r's.

This isn't a problem at all - one can write CDR's with the TOC at the end of the disc, instead of the inner.

The simple fact is CDRW discs have much lower reflectivity than CDR's or pressed discs.

The laser normally has an AGC circuit to cope with variations, but it is not sufficient on older mechs to allow the playing of CDRW's, as the reflected signal and the difference between a 'pit' and a 'land' is of insufficient amplitude.
