Very good Discuss

The Desperate Bicycles were formed in 1977 as an experiment in the economics of punk's DIY methodology. Dave Papworth (drums), Nicky Stephens (keyboards), Roger Stephens (Bass) and Danny Wigley (vocals) wanted to see how cheaply they could record and release music. The result was the Smokescreen 7", released in an edition of 500 on their newly formed Refill label, costing them £153. The single was repressed in an edition of 1000 and sold out in a fortnight; the second release, The Medium Was Tedium 7" was released in an edition of 1000 and sold out in a week. In 1978 DB released the New Cross New Cross EP, and two 7"s; Occupied Terrotory and Grief Is Very Private. In 1980, Papworth and Stephens were replaced by Dan Electro (guitar) and Jeff Titley (drums), and the Remorse Code LP was released. The band split up in 1981.

John Peel used to play them all the time and they were favourite band from the Punk/New Wave era - along with the Television Personalities, but they were only Part Time Punks.

Did anybody mention Tractor BTW - another superb group rather earlier than the DBs though.

Diccus,

You have more reason to hang your head than the "Touran Touran" comment. I know who you support! Winker

ROFT,

You will have to do better than that, Diccus had them in the first post.

BTW saw the Motors supporting Penetration at the City Hall Newcastle many moons ago. Looking forward to seeing the lovely Pauline (Murray) again on Sunday. It will be interesting to see how kind the years have been to Fay Fife from the Rezillos as well.

Dicuss, I shall enjoy the Germany trip, report to follow in due course. You down the Academy on Sunday?

I saw Penetration in the early days and held a candle for them as Pauline was a Patti Smith fan and PS was hugely influential on me in the late 70's/early 80's and saw her (PS) numerous times until she disappeared off the Planet with Fred 'Sonic' Smith.

About 4 years ago saw Penetration in a pub in Sunderland (Championship contenders Winker) We went very early and i ended up on Rum and cokes. At the end of the gig i wandered into the dressing room and started chatting to the band, particularly Pauline and we had a nice natter about child rearing (sorry, not very rock n roll). I had a headache the next day.Robert Blamire, bassist ( I think) and is married to Pauline looked less than impressed by my drunken chatter (quite right too). As an a side my dad played golf with Rob's mother - not exactly A list, but you've gotta take what you can.

Saw the Rezillos and the Revillos at Durham Univ way back in late 70's when i was a boy. On one occasion I was 'on the door', but remember them being good. Actually we've just bought one of those vinyl tablecloths that remind me of Fay Fife's dresses!!

No i'm not away to the Academy on Sunday. Tonight i'm seeing Josh Rouse at the Live and tomorrow Alejandro Escovedo at the Cluny. Saw Tift Merritt last week and had a good bit of banter with her (and bought her a bottle of beer when she was on stage). She was excellent.
