Welcome to MAC-land. You now have license to be smug.

Is my anticipation of being smug as good a the feeling of being smug? Or is the destination better than the journey?

I decided not to be smug until all my bits and pieces are transferred and working from the PC.
One thing is the curser seems to have a mind of it's own.

Hi munch. A refurbed 24" iMac 2 Gb RAM and 320Gb hard drive. Gosh it's screens big. It's like using your computer in a cinema. If only the cursor would stop flying off to side and hiding(sulking maybe).

All your bits and pieces?! That sounds very painful. Are you sure you had to go to such extremes?

Cursers always have a mind of their own ... that's why they curse.

As far as the cursor, though, check the mouse tracking speed; might need to slow it down. You'll find the controls in System Preferences, the icon for which should be in your dock; it's white and looks like a light switch plate. Open it and look for Hardware, in which you'll find keyboard and mouse controls.
All best,
Fred

Sounds like you are using the mouse on a shiny surface, put a bit of paper or a mouse mat under it.
If it continues check the mouse where the light is for a tiny annoying pubic hair or spot of dust.
If it continues try a USB mouse of any find.

Probably left behind when he transferred his bits and pieces from the PC.
Best,

Shame they didn't find a proper place for it on the keyboard.

Hi Howard
Greetings from my 24" iMac to yours! Welcome to the club! My cordless mouse sits very happily on a Naim mousemat depicting an ARO. No wonder I keep getting drawn to the black stuff!
My iMac (tempting fate I know!) has worked flawlessly for 18 months. It just gets on with the job. Hope you enjoy yours as much.

I've had my G4 for at least 5 years now, maybe 6. Once they came out with OSX I've not called my tech guy except to say I missed him......
I do like those iMacs with big screens, a guy I do some part time work for has 2 in his office. I do mailings and print pages from his catalog. I want one, but I'll let my G4 die first. It just keeps plugging along.

System 7 or OS 9 - those were the days - I loved spending an afternoon resolving conflicts - the fun has gone out of computing.

Well after many years having a PC and building them myself from about 1992, I finally decided to buy myself a new computer (I had used Macs on and off at work). I've had dual processor models for a few years but couldn't see any real good ones around that I fancied so I got myself a Mac Pro with a couple of 3.2gig processors, 10mb ram, dual superdrives the Nvidea 512 graphics card two 500gb hdds and a couple of those nice 30 inch HD screens.
Well I am most surprised (really!) at how much I can now do with so little effort. I've got Windows Vista running as a virtual machine just whilst I ween myself off a few PC applications, but it's absolutely brillant to use.
Anyone got any good sugestions for a database package to use on the Mac?
Cheers
Tim

"10mb ram"? Wow that OS-X must be really lean
). Seriously, nice set-up. What do you use it for?

I'm still exploring what it can do. But on my PC I had a dedicated matrox video capture card and did quite a bit of video stuff. Mac looks like it doen't need all the extra dedicated cards as my first down load of video was pretty good quality.
I also have some databases to move over to the Mac from the past 15 years or so. Mostly scholarly articles and biblio's and also a number of piccies which are embedded within the DB. Some of the stuff is still using DBase 4 in a developed shell. So am hoping for a good dbase package for the mac so I can convert/ bring up to date etc.
Looks like I will still need a bit more Ram as having several things going at once does reduce the speed. I think I'll take it up to 16gb that should do it.
Cheers

FileMaker is the definitive database app for the Mac.
However NeoOffice (Open Office for the Mac) does have database and reporting capability - however I could not get it to create calculated values based on other calculated values in the reports or in the records. (This could be a comprehension failure on my part)

Thanks Derek:
I've heard of Filemaker as it seems there is a version for the PC as well. But have heard mixed reviews 50/50 good/bad.
I will look at Neo Office.
Cheers
