Tord Gustavsen/Stanko/EST

Posted by: Diccus62 on 23 November 2009

Nic Naim and my own will have helped to move me out of my musical comfort zone. I have long thought Jazz held something for me. I have tried many of the old jazz guys and think they are fine but it doesn't really get me. However I really enjoyed Tomasz Stanko and I think I am now hooked. E.S.T. however have hit me between the eyes and I can't stop playing them.... particularly 'behind the yashmak' which absolutely blows me away. Live - OMG

Have been listening to Tord Gustavsen on Myspace and I like what i hear. I have tho clearly missed the tour this autumn. Where should I start with this guy?

It's nice to be out of my comfort zone - thanks Nic Smile

There is a nice appreciative piece on ECM's 40th anniversary in today's New York Times Art's and Leisure section. www.nytimes.com.

Not quite as photogenic as Adrian's poster collection, but a nice overview for a wide general audience.

Good listening,

Bruce

Thanks Bruce - good read and a link direct to the article.

If you like the music of E.S.T. you should catch this album. Great interpretations of their music. I posted this on the "listening to" thread.

Diccus - this has been a good positive thread highlighting a lot of great music. Any updates? Are you still listening or off on something else now?

Cheers

Speaking for me I bought the Bendikt disc and am loving it. What's his other stuff like Adrian?

Ewen - I have Benedikt in a couple of other albums - Cyminology on ECM - not my favourite but you might like it - on spotify to try.

I do like this album though. He is in a group call Max.Bab. This is a "space" album and they even do a version of the E.S.T classic From Gagarin's Point of View.

Diccus,

You might want to join me for this gig at the Sage Nik Bartsch

I'm dragging another mate along who is exploring jazz in much the same way as you. Seats are unreserved so we could keep you company if you fancy it.

I saw them the last time they were here and thought they were great, Adrian is a fan as well, which is usually a good recommendation.

Regards

Thought I would add a few more artists and titles to this thread that are worth checking out. A little of the Italian influence in these albums.

First up Paolo Fresu. A great trumpeter from Italy who I have been a fan of for many years. He has released a lot of material but the two albums I like best of his are Melos and Night On The City. Beautiful trumpet tone, these are simple and elegant albums with some lovely tunes.

Another artist I really like is the Italian pianist Enrico Pieranunzi. He is very prolific and has released many great trio albums. Here are a few to check out.

Another great artist is Enrico Rava. He appears regularly on the ECM label (all worth checking out) but he has done a lot of other recordings on other labels. Two I really like are

Some more to follow.

This is one of my favourite jazzy albums. Beautiful guitar playing from John Abercrombie with the gorgeous bass of Hein Van De Geyn and then the drums of Joe La Barbara (who used to play with Bill Evans). And I see it is on Spotify to try.....love the track Metheny.

Stefano Bollani - I went to see him with MilesSmiles the other week. The guy is a piano genius and a great sense of humour. Again a lot of output but a few to try would be

and this little gem on Venus Records

Sorry chaps. I have listened to some of the things recommended on here and still listen mostly to the EST stuff. I do though like Tord Gustavsen 'Being There' and Jahnel 'modular concepts' and really like the Bad Plus, indeed had them on in the car today. Slightly off thread, i'm loving Ella at the mo

Thanks for all the recommends and i'll have to check back to see what I have missed.

Cheers again y'all

I know it is a shameless plug...

But this album by new Aussie trio Trichotomy has been getting rave reviews very relevant to this thread (Euro jazz from down under)!

Got a 5 star clipping form Manchester Evening News today that said "A suitable candidate to fill the large-shaped hole left by EST"

and Evening Standard last week;
"tuneful, scholarly approach to improvisation recalls the lyricism of EST and energy level of The Bad Plus...excellent"

think some of you may like it

Simon - no need for the shameless. It is a great album and I am very happy to see Naim out there signing good, forward looking jazz acts like this.

It has been in my cd player a lot this week. When can I get the new Neil Cowley - at Bristol?

Cheers

unfortunately not...you'll have to wait until march, it won't be ready in time!
but thank you so much for your support. appreciate it!

This well worth checking out - the Helge Lien Trio. A superb group who are contenders to take the mantle of European jazz supergroup from E.S.T.

Recorded at Rainbow Studios by Jan Erik Kongshaug (so same as many ECM albums), this is great European jazz trio. Not cheap but worth it.

Other albums worth looking at include

These albums are hard to find but best prices are over at jpc.de - 9.95 EUR for hello troll and 22.95 eur for the others.

Lontano and MilesSmiles will tell you I hated the gig but on their recommendation I bought the album Hamada by Nils Petter Molvaer. Played it once and it's an automatic inclusion here. Atmospheric, sometimes mellow, occasionally frantic, trumpet-driven electronic soundscapes.

I'll stop there for fear of ending up in Pseud's Corner.

Chris - as you like the Hamada, you may also like this album - very mellow, a little challenging but ultimately rewarding - more of the soundscapes

Thanks Adrian, I'll check it out.

This is one of my favourite threads on the forum. Thanks to all the contributors here. Some of the best recorded music that I have heard is represented in this thread. Using this as a guide, I managed to pick up lots of goodies during my recent trip to the US. Thanks chaps. Big Grin

Here's a new album out that will appeal to fans of Tord, EST etc etc. The Espen Eriksen Trio - You Had Me At Goodbye - released on Rune Gramnofon.

"The jazz world is not short on piano trios, but it´s not every day that one comes across a new trio with a personal musical language. This debut release from the Norwegian trio contains highly melodical and lyrical instrumentals with elements from Scandinavian folk and melancholia and shades of the deep woods. It´s definitely jazz, but their less is more approach is in contrast to most of their contemporaries, with structures almost like pop songs and with a strong focus on melodies and short solos. It´s fair to place them in a tradition with Tord Gustavsen Trio and the late Esbjörn Svensson Trio, but without really sounding like any of them. A most welcome addition to our catalogue."
