NFL 2009

Posted by: JamieL_v2 on 15 September 2009

I know a lot of people here will not be fans, but I know there are a few who are, so I though a thread for the new season would get some interesting contributions.

Not quite seen all the week one results, but Pittsburgh looked strong, as did Tennessee, great opener.

Here are some predictions I posted on another (small) forum:

NFC
The NFC has few stand out teams, a lot falling back, and a few rebuilding. The South is strong, as is the East, the North competitive, only the West has a number of weak teams. New York Giants, Arizona Cardinals and Green Bay Packers I think will be in the play-offs, the rest will be very close, with a handful of poor teams at the bottom.

NFC East:
New York Giants
Dallas Cowboys
Philadelphia Eagles
Washington Redskins

Close division, but they are all tough. The Giants will probably be the most consistent team. Dallas still have a lot of talented players, it is just whether they will gel into a team. I just don't believe that Phildelphia will be anything special, McNabb is getting old. Washington will find it a hard division to compete in, but we not be bad.

NFC North
Green Bay Packers
Minnesota Vikings
Chicago Bears
Detroit Lions

I think Green Bay will build on last year, Minnesota's running game will be good. I don't think Jay Cutler is the final piece needed for Chicago, I think he will be disruptive, I do think that Detroit will win more games than last year (they lost all 16 for those who do not know).

NFC South
Atlanta Falcons
New Orleans Saints
Carloina Panthers
Tampa Bay Buccaneers

I think that each team has won this division at least once in the last five years. Tampa might be rebuilding under a new coach, but the other three are all competitive.

NFC West
Arizona Cardinals
Seattle Seahawks
San Francisco 49'ers
St Loius Rams

Arizona will not take teams by suprise this year, but will be good, and do not have a lot of competition in the division.

Division winners: New York Giants, Green Bay Packers, Atlanta Falcons, Arizona Cardinals
Wild Cards: Minnesota Vikings, and one of Dallas Cowboys, Chicago Bears, New Orleans Saints, Carloina Panthers - it is that even.
Weak teams: Detroit Lions, San Francisco 49'ers, St Loius Rams

AFC
Steelers, Patriots, Chargers are the class of the AFC, an awful lot of other good teams, and oh dear, how the AFC West has fallen. San Diego can book their playoff birth now (you don't know how that pains me to say)

AFC East:
New England Patriots
Miami Dolphins
New York Jets
Buffalo Bills

With Brady back The Patriots will be the class of the division again, Miami will be good, the Jets are rebuilding, will have as lot of pieces though, and Buffalo will probably start strong and fade as they often do. Strong division.

AFC North:
Pittsburgh Steelers
Baltimore Ravens
Cleveland Browns
Cincinnati Bengals

The Steelers are just a great consistent team, brilliantly run, a coach who has the confidence that he will be backed, a quarterback who is just a winner. I know they won last year, but hard to pick against them. The Ravens will be tough, play hard football and give Pittsburgh a run for the division. Cleveland and Cincinnati are so, so.

AFC South:
Tennessee Titans
Indianapolis Colts
Jacksonville Jaguars
Houston Texans

A lot of talent in this division, I think the Titans will remain good, Jeff Fisher is such a good coach, the Colts are still very strong. Jacksonville will be much stronger than last year's disarray, and Houston have a tough job to complete against such strong teams.

AFC West:
San Diego Chargers
Kansas City Chiefs
Denver Broncos
Oakland Raiders

The AFC Worst as it was known last year, San Diego are head and shoulders above the rest, who are all rebuilding, or in the case of Oakland, just a mess. Denver so long a contender have fallen apart since the sacking of Shannahan, good riddance to Cutler, but they do not have a replacement, a long season ahead.

Division winners: New England Patriots, Pittsburgh Steelers, Tennessee Titans, San Diego Chargers
Wild cards: Baltimore Ravens, Indianapolis Colts (Dolphins could be there too).

The NFL looks more open and even than it has for years, there are few teams that can be pencilled in division winners, last years winners Pittsbugh are hard to pick against, and San Diego are very good in a division with no opposition. New England will be back, but the Dolphins are a good team to challenge. Indianalpolis will be strong, but have a new coach, so it might not gel as under Dungy. The NFC is grown stranger over the last few years, and the best teams are on a par with the AFC's best.

Looking back at my picks for last year, they were so wrong, this year will be no better. Some teams who looked like no-hoper's will rise, and some team who look like winners will get key injuries, or fall apart. Remember how Dallas looked sure to win the Superbowl this time last year, but didn't even make the playoffs.

If I had to pick a Superbowl it would be New York Giants vs Pittsburgh Steelers, but that is a dull pick, as it is the last two winners against each other. They are both the team to beat in their conference, but a lot of teams will run them close.

Teams in italic are weak and will not compete.

Since writing that, I must add that Green bay look like a very strong contender for the Superbowl too. I may also have under-rated Seattle who have gained some good players. I wrote this before Favre joined Minnesota, he might be a good fit there as the running game should stop him from having to try win in the 4th quarter, but I still think is gambles too much, and will throw a lot of interceptions.

Speaking of interceptions, I did see jay Cuttler's first half at Chicago. Ha, ha, not so great without the rest of the Denver offense. (I am now going to catch the second half, and will probably have to eat my works - but I don;t think so really).

There are teams I have disliked in the past, but this year there is one I am saving nearly all my spleen for, I will not forgive what I consider unforgivable, and I neither like the coach or the incumbent QB, let alone the animal torturer they have taken on:

... not a great start for my Dolphins, hope the preseason success doesn't turn out to be a jinx.

....A good start but tougher games to come ...but with a fit Romo we could make the play-offs.

NY Giants at Dallas in the new stadium next Sunday night should be a good game, and let us know a bit about how that division stands.

Chris Collinsworth was very good last Sunday replacing John Madden in the booth, very impressed. I will miss John Madden greatly, but at least the Sunday night games will continue to have a good commentary.

Just caught up on some highlights on nfl.com. Perhaps highlights is not the word for the Broncos at Bengals, ouch, yes Denver won, and yes it was the longest pass in the last minute of NFL history, but bouncing the pass off defenders to a fortunate receiver is not going to get it done in this league.

Kyle Orton is just too slow in releasing the ball to have any success against teams better than the Bengals. They will struggle against The Browns.

The Raiders and The Bills look much better than expected judging by the Monday night highlights, both running very good teams close.

Well the Eagles won, but I think McNabb's ribs will cause trouble in the coming weeks, I should not laugh, but I do anyway.

A bit off topic but in College Football my 'CANES just wooped the Yellow Jackets and ended a four game hex against them - go 'CANES!!!

I think any American Football is quite at home in this thread, probably just a few souls who will participate anyway.

How are Notre Dame doing? There are some teams it is just more fun to dislike, and few as disliked as Notre Dame it seems.

I must catch up on the PTI webcast, I love Tony Kornheiser and Mike Wilbon - ESPN podcast index.

Sorry if I am coming over as too partisan. I love the game, but I do have my favourites, and also those I love to root against too. I nearly always admire a great play though.

It is not so much the crimes which concern me, as the lack of morality is in the man which allowed him to do such vile things to animals which by their nature placed their trust in him.

Yes, he is giving money to charities to buy back credibility, but I do not see that as anything more than what he has either has considered, or been advised to do, in order to gain back acceptance.

I do not object to him earning a living, I object to him being allowed back into a league in a position where he is a role model for youngsters.

Perhaps his time in jail has allowed him to consider his wrongs, but I do not think he deserves a second chance from the NFL. There are plenty of other jobs he could go. He gave no second chances to the dogs he killed.

OK, so what does he have to do to satisfy you that he truly is repentant? He has convinced the NFL commissioner (the toughest commissioner ever to run the NFL) that he should be allowed back but not you it seems. He has done his jail time as a model citizen so I'm not sure what else he can do to!

Before you pick on Vick you should maybe take a look at the others who have been involved either directly or indirectly in serious crimes yet continue to ply their trade in the NFL.

You are of course entitled to your point of view but I'll stick with mine.

Ran a dog dogfighting ring is the short version of the story. Google Michael Vick Dogfighting for more.

Jim

In addition to the dog fighting, he electrocuted and hung dogs that did not perform.

He can not convince me he is repentant, but he is welcome to take on a job where he is not a role model.

He did not give his dogs a second chance, and he gets none from me. Repentance is one thing, or feeling sorry for getting caught, but a lack of morality is something I do not think can be repented.

After the judges comments on Andy Reid and his neglect for his children, combined with this, I was not going to be a Philadelphia fan anyway.

As you will gather I am a particular lover of animals, so this is perhaps my 'beef' (even if I don't eat beef).

I will shut up about this now, but expect a few cheers when Philadelphia lose from time to time. Kevin Kolb is the starting QB this Sunday by the way.

All that apart, I do think it is going to be a fun season.

Who are you supporting and who are you rooting against Jim?

Is anyone else looking forward to the punters targetting the Dallas scoreboard?

For my sins I am a Browns fan - it hasn't been much fun since they returned to the league in 1999 though!

Lucking though, my Ohio State Buckeyes make up for it although they cannot win the big one except for that National Championship over the Hurricanes in 2002.

I got into football in the mid 80's watching those fantastic AFC championship games between the Browns and Broncos (Kosar vs. Elway), I still have one of those games on tape. Hence being a Broncos fan, but those games were better than those Superbowls, well, couldn't be much worse again as a Broncos fan.

Two of the best QBs I have ever seen, but I know The Browns have an even more glorious history at running back with the legendary Jim Brown.

How do you feel about 'The Ravens'? I hope it is not a sore topic.
Posted on: 19 September 2009 by Exiled Highlander
Ravens are meaningless to me. As long as we beat Pukesburgh all is well in the world! Smile

It would be nice to get a few of the UK NFL fans together one night this season for a couple of games, or maybe even a Superbowl party at the end of it all.

I would be very happy to be host, if Leeds is not too far flung for others.

I do think we might have to have a truce on partisanship that night though. It is good that the game brings out such loyalty though.

Jim, do you have a dog mask or biscuits to throw?

Do you have an AFC vs NFC bias? I must admit that I do have a bit of AFC loyalty, although there are NFC teams I do like a lot.

I have my divisional rivalries too, San Diego and their spoilt QB, Kansas and their, well lack of a credible team*. Despite myself, I couldn't help enjoying seeing The Raiders put together some good plays last week though, not bad at all, and against a good team.

*I admit The Broncos are not a credible team though this year, squeaking past Cincinnati on a fluke play, oh dear me.

That would be somewhat unusual, even in west London.

Seemed like a reasonable question to me Smile

Spent many days with my dad and grandfather at the old Cleveland Stadium on the edge of Lake Erie back in the 50s/60s. Always played Pittsburgh at home on a Saturday night, which we always attended (night games were very rare back then). Obviously loved the championship year in '64.

Was at the first-ever Monday Night Football game between Cleveland and the Jets with Namath - best of all, Namath had an amazing game but the Browns won.

Todays Dallas/NYG game should be fun.

Does anyone know a predictions league/website? I used to play on a site called 'Superbru' but they didn't understand NFL, and kept making mistakes, especially getting the American way of showing the home team last (at), and so got some scores the wrong way round.

I know there is fantasy football, but that misses the point of American Football for me, as well as the individual skill, it is about the tactics and the coaches strategy.

'Superbru' was good, as it allowed you to choose the winner, the score, and the margin of the win, and were scored for getting it right, or less for being near, but it all added up.

I am sure I have mentioned it before, but when I had an interview with Jim Hensons many years ago, my (future) boss Mike loved my description of American Football as 'Chess with violence'.

Just caught up with Sundays games.

Did anyone else see 'The Saints'? This is not my anti Philadelphia bias speaking (I did enjoy the result), but putting up over 40 points of offense for the second week running. They looked fantastic, not sure how good their defense is, but harks back to The Rams of ten years ago.

The Broncos are top of their division, 2:0, I shall enjoy it while I can. The Raiders next week, who Tom Cable seems to have pulled together, and then Dallas, New England, San Diego, Baltimore and Pittsburgh (weeks 4-9, with a bye), it will not last. They still have Indianapolis, The Giants, and of course another meeting with San Diego to come after that, so I will enjoy this brief moment atop the division.

Cincinnati beat Green Bay, well I never. Jerry Jones new stadium in Dallas is quite spectacular, nice TV too, and the punters managed to not kick the ball into it now the games count.

Miami against Indianapolis tonight.

Only the second week, and I am really enjoying this new season.

I think you need to do more research. You have jumped to conclusions based on a little knowledge and a little reading. Look a bit deeper than the sensationalised headlines.

I think you will find he is far from an "evil bastard".

I am happy to see this thread. I am a raiders fan ( have sympathy) but also a niners fan who seem to be off on the right foot. I am really loving watching the fins right now because of the wildcat offense. Brings alot of excitement and gave the colts d a real panic in the third last night.

John

At least you get to see the games - one of the things I really miss since I've been back here is watching football on a Sunday, sometimes in Griffs Sports bar in Houston or sprawled out on the sofa at the house. As a Browns fan I empathise with you on the Raiders but you have to stick with them through thick and thin. We'll come good this season....
