NFL 2009

Posted by: JamieL_v2 on 15 September 2009

I know a lot of people here will not be fans, but I know there are a few who are, so I though a thread for the new season would get some interesting contributions.

Not quite seen all the week one results, but Pittsburgh looked strong, as did Tennessee, great opener.

Here are some predictions I posted on another (small) forum:

NFC
The NFC has few stand out teams, a lot falling back, and a few rebuilding. The South is strong, as is the East, the North competitive, only the West has a number of weak teams. New York Giants, Arizona Cardinals and Green Bay Packers I think will be in the play-offs, the rest will be very close, with a handful of poor teams at the bottom.

NFC East:
New York Giants
Dallas Cowboys
Philadelphia Eagles
Washington Redskins

Close division, but they are all tough. The Giants will probably be the most consistent team. Dallas still have a lot of talented players, it is just whether they will gel into a team. I just don't believe that Phildelphia will be anything special, McNabb is getting old. Washington will find it a hard division to compete in, but we not be bad.

NFC North
Green Bay Packers
Minnesota Vikings
Chicago Bears
Detroit Lions

I think Green Bay will build on last year, Minnesota's running game will be good. I don't think Jay Cutler is the final piece needed for Chicago, I think he will be disruptive, I do think that Detroit will win more games than last year (they lost all 16 for those who do not know).

NFC South
Atlanta Falcons
New Orleans Saints
Carloina Panthers
Tampa Bay Buccaneers

I think that each team has won this division at least once in the last five years. Tampa might be rebuilding under a new coach, but the other three are all competitive.

NFC West
Arizona Cardinals
Seattle Seahawks
San Francisco 49'ers
St Loius Rams

Arizona will not take teams by suprise this year, but will be good, and do not have a lot of competition in the division.

Division winners: New York Giants, Green Bay Packers, Atlanta Falcons, Arizona Cardinals
Wild Cards: Minnesota Vikings, and one of Dallas Cowboys, Chicago Bears, New Orleans Saints, Carloina Panthers - it is that even.
Weak teams: Detroit Lions, San Francisco 49'ers, St Loius Rams

AFC
Steelers, Patriots, Chargers are the class of the AFC, an awful lot of other good teams, and oh dear, how the AFC West has fallen. San Diego can book their playoff birth now (you don't know how that pains me to say)

AFC East:
New England Patriots
Miami Dolphins
New York Jets
Buffalo Bills

With Brady back The Patriots will be the class of the division again, Miami will be good, the Jets are rebuilding, will have as lot of pieces though, and Buffalo will probably start strong and fade as they often do. Strong division.

AFC North:
Pittsburgh Steelers
Baltimore Ravens
Cleveland Browns
Cincinnati Bengals

The Steelers are just a great consistent team, brilliantly run, a coach who has the confidence that he will be backed, a quarterback who is just a winner. I know they won last year, but hard to pick against them. The Ravens will be tough, play hard football and give Pittsburgh a run for the division. Cleveland and Cincinnati are so, so.

AFC South:
Tennessee Titans
Indianapolis Colts
Jacksonville Jaguars
Houston Texans

A lot of talent in this division, I think the Titans will remain good, Jeff Fisher is such a good coach, the Colts are still very strong. Jacksonville will be much stronger than last year's disarray, and Houston have a tough job to complete against such strong teams.

AFC West:
San Diego Chargers
Kansas City Chiefs
Denver Broncos
Oakland Raiders

The AFC Worst as it was known last year, San Diego are head and shoulders above the rest, who are all rebuilding, or in the case of Oakland, just a mess. Denver so long a contender have fallen apart since the sacking of Shannahan, good riddance to Cutler, but they do not have a replacement, a long season ahead.

Division winners: New England Patriots, Pittsburgh Steelers, Tennessee Titans, San Diego Chargers
Wild cards: Baltimore Ravens, Indianapolis Colts (Dolphins could be there too).

The NFL looks more open and even than it has for years, there are few teams that can be pencilled in division winners, last years winners Pittsbugh are hard to pick against, and San Diego are very good in a division with no opposition. New England will be back, but the Dolphins are a good team to challenge. Indianalpolis will be strong, but have a new coach, so it might not gel as under Dungy. The NFC is grown stranger over the last few years, and the best teams are on a par with the AFC's best.

Looking back at my picks for last year, they were so wrong, this year will be no better. Some teams who looked like no-hoper's will rise, and some team who look like winners will get key injuries, or fall apart. Remember how Dallas looked sure to win the Superbowl this time last year, but didn't even make the playoffs.

If I had to pick a Superbowl it would be New York Giants vs Pittsburgh Steelers, but that is a dull pick, as it is the last two winners against each other. They are both the team to beat in their conference, but a lot of teams will run them close.

Teams in italic are weak and will not compete.

Since writing that, I must add that Green bay look like a very strong contender for the Superbowl too. I may also have under-rated Seattle who have gained some good players. I wrote this before Favre joined Minnesota, he might be a good fit there as the running game should stop him from having to try win in the 4th quarter, but I still think is gambles too much, and will throw a lot of interceptions.

Speaking of interceptions, I did see jay Cuttler's first half at Chicago. Ha, ha, not so great without the rest of the Denver offense. (I am now going to catch the second half, and will probably have to eat my works - but I don;t think so really).

There are teams I have disliked in the past, but this year there is one I am saving nearly all my spleen for, I will not forgive what I consider unforgivable, and I neither like the coach or the incumbent QB, let alone the animal torturer they have taken on:

I registered as soon as the tickets became available each of the last three years. The first year sold out before my number came up, I got tickets each of the last two years. Apparently over 60,000 tickets were sold for yesterday's game on the first day, in 3 hours I heard.

People had traveled from Europe to see the game, over 84,000 (sold out, again) were there.

Not a great game, but good to feel the atmosphere. Definitely worth the ticket price £65, and the 400 miles round trip. I hope that the next game there gets more closely matched teams though.

There is talk of the UK getting two games next year, possibly one at Wembley and one at Cardiff.

Watched the Atlanta at Dallas and Arizona at The Giants games today, both really enjoyable.

Oliver, that must have been a tough loss, after leading 24 - 3 after the first quarter. See you next week in Hampshire.

Better catch up on some sleep now, shattered.

I have been looking at the nfl.com teams rankings, the fans, and the expert picks.

The Colts seem to lead the AFC teams for everyone, and The Saints for the NFC.

I can't help thinking that we could see yet another Colts vs. Patriots AFC championship game. The Pats might have started slow(ish) but I think they will get stronger as the season progresses.

The NFC is harder to predict, teams seem a bit up and down, but it is hard to pick against The Saints right now.

I am really looking forward to The Giants at Denver on Thanksgiving day, I think that will tell us quite a bit about both teams.

A couple more weeks, and I will have a look back at my pre-season predictions, somehow The Titans do not look quite as impressive as I thought they would be, and I really saw The Bengals and Broncos play well, erm, maybe not. I was right for a few divisions, and very, very wrong about a few teams, but that is why the NFL is so much fun to watch, almost many team can win any game if they get up for it.

Quite a game in the Meadowlands today, Ginn returns two kick offs for 100 and 101 yard TDs - I'm a happy Dolphan. Smile

Grinning Fins. Hating Raiders. Slacking Packers. Maven Ravens (sorry Jamie but I just cant be happy while the Broncos are undefeated!)

And the Colts hold on to their undefeated season by a thread.

The Browns meantime continue to be The Browns. They have a perfect colour of uniform that matches their current play though. I predict that Brian Daboll, the current Offensive Coordinator will be fired during the bye-week (maybe even today).

Quinn will start and will look like a QB compared to Anderson who is really, realy bad.

Sigh.

Hopefully for not too much longer, the Colts and the Saints are now officially on my perfect season watch list. Winker

Only just caught up with the games recorded at the weekend.

Well normality came to the Denver season, going to Baltimore is always hard with that defence, and The Ravens really needed that win in their division. Not a surprise. Just so long as after this start we keep The Chargers from getting into the post season, and preferably without the help of Ed Hochuli.

Surprised at The Giants three game slide, that will be an interesting division, Dallas looking quite strong now.

Ted Ginn jnr. really made his presence felt on Sunday, brilliant play, and great to see Jason Taylor get an interception touchdown. Fun game. Oliver you must be very happy with that one.

It is a slightly strange year with the handful of teams who just can not put up a good game, it makes it hard to judge how good the teams with winning records are, and hard for the fans of the teams who are losing.

The Saints and Colts do look good, but those teams with a couple of losses could still look very good in another nine weeks, 12-4 is still a great season and a launchpad for the playoffs.

Those games where Rich Gannon used to play well around nine years ago.

John, did you think Siragussa's driving Gannon into the ground was a dirty play? I certainly did at the time.

Given I was joining the Wade Phillips OUT! brigade recently I have to admit he (& the team) have turned my Cowboys around ..The Talent is undoubtably there but team spirit apparently wasn't.

Now? ok it's early days but Sunday's win might well be a turning point .... Next week is the dreaded Eagles Eek so we have to be up for it!

....And who said Romo was a busted flush? ......Yeah right

The only play that pissed me off more was the "tuck rule" in the snow. That was the beginning of our era of hopelessness, even though we made it to the super bowl after that.

But I remember that play with Siragusa very clearly. I was jumping up and down screaming and everyone thought I was crazy until they showed the replay and the announcers started explaining it. It is the type of play that would have gotten a flag for sure these days. But that is all part of the game.

By coincidence I ended up working with Tony Siragusa a couple of years later and I wanted to talk to him about it in the worst way. But he is a bit of an imposing figure to say the least and not a real "lets talk about it" kind of guy. I have an extended story about my experience with him, but it really can not be shared on a public forum. Hilarious and scary at the same time.

Discretion was a good choice in this case - the man is a monster!

I didn't like Siragussa as a player, but I am warming to him as a sideline commentator. I thought he was awful at first, would not shut up, but now he is good at offering a different perspective, and getting information from players.

I did like it when he covered one of the Wembley games, he had not heard the English word 'bloke', and he rather enthusiastic about it.

So far the Dolphins are keeping up with the Pats, let's see what the 4th quarter will bring.

Miles

Not quite good enough! That siad, my Browns are so bad that they reportedly lost to the Bye Week yesterday!

Jim
Posted on: 09 November 2009 by John M
You and me both Jim. That was funny!

Sorry Miles. I was really rooting for them.

The only excitement this week for me was in college football, watching Stanford beat Oregon.

Then again, Warner throwing 5 ints and then 5 td's for the win was pretty amazing.

I also think the Titans are going to make a resurgence until Vince Young blows up once again.
Posted on: 09 November 2009 by JamieL_v2
Next Sunday's Pats Colts game is looking very tasty.

Big night for Denver, Baltimore was not a surprising loss, but the game at home to Pittsburgh is one they need to win with the Chargers creeping up on them, and also to show they can play against another big team.

New Orleans and Indianapolis still looking great.

Must also say I really enjoyed watching the Cowboys beat the Eagles last night.

After tonight I might have to have a look at my pre-season predictions, oh dear.
Posted on: 10 November 2009 by JamieL_v2
Not a surprise Denver losing to Pittsburgh last night.

I think a trip to Washington next week will be sort out their two game losing streak. If they beat San Diego at home the week after, I think they will win the division (and boy have my predictions been good this year, and yes I can hear your laughter from here).

The interesting game for the Broncos comes on 13 Dec when they travel to Indianapolis, that as with last night's Pittsburgh game will show them the quality they will face in the post season (if and when they get there). They have beaten the Patriots though, so their record in not just beating up teams that have losing records.

So half way through the season how do my pre-season predictions look. maybe not quite as bad as I thought.

I don't think I was alone in not seeing the fall of the Titans. I did think Indianapolis and New Orleans would be good, but not quite that good.

The NFC East is competitive between the three teams I though would fight for it, well if the Giants can get off the slide. Dallas look good, but there is the annual December slide to consider, still I hope they hold off the Eagles.

I really did not think that Favre would fit so well with Minnesota, and that Green Bay would have such a poor offensive line. I think I was right about the Bears and Lions though, the latter might even have another win in them.

Atlanta look like a likely wild card, and Arizona look good in the West.

In the AFC I would not bet against Bill Belichick and the Patriots, nor the Colts with Peyton Manning. Pittsburgh and Baltimore are contenders as ever, but Cincinnati I did not see coming at all, good for them. Tough to predict the central, and it might even give both the wild card teams.

Also good to see Houston putting up a good team, but I don't see them in the post season.

I did not see Denver having a defense at all, let alone one of the best in the league, and Orton seems OK in McDaniel's offense. I think they still have to look over heir shoulder for the Chargers though.

I am surprised by how some teams are just falling apart, and I am sorry that some of them are the teams with fans here, and it does make me a little embarrassed about how my team are doing, but not that much (if they lose the next eight games I will be so annoyed now).

So the post season looks like the usual contenders in the AFC, Patriots, Colts, Steelers, maybe The Ravens, and if Denver make it, they will find it hard. Cincinnati might make it interesting.

In the NFC, New Orleans and Minnesota look a little above the rest, but with half a season Dallas and Arizona can throw some offensive firepower into the mix, and maybe a couple of the second placed teams can push through.

I can't predict a Superbowl, the elite teams are too close. I don't think Miami will be playing in their home stadium though.

Jamie -

You are too kind. I think Jim and I are both under no illusions about our respective teams! Good for the Broncos even though I hate them, historically speaking. It is hard to keep up rivalries any more the way players and coaches move around from team to team. I know it sounds new agey, but I just like to watch a good, exciting game with some great catches, and as few penalties as possible. So I dont watch the Raiders much, ha ha. These days it seems like I follow players I like and thus their team. I will always stay loyal to the Raiders though just because that is where I am from.

Damn the Steelers really looked good last night, and even after the Broncos shut them down in the first half. Harrison made some wicked hits/tackles last night as well.

As for your predictions, yeah pretty good.

In 1984 when I first started watching American Football I fell in love with the QB class of 1983 and in particular the unbelievable stuff that Dan Marino did in Miami. Man, I just loved that Dolphin air attack.

I also rejoiced when John Elway orchestrated "the drive" in 1987 to beat the Browns. I stayed up until 3am to listen to it on US Armed Forces radio when I lived in Aberdeen.

I was hooked a die hard fan of those two amazing QB's. I hated the Browns, ugly uniform, ugly town, ugly team.

Then as fate would have it I moved to Cleveland in 1997 for work and The Browns were gone - moved by Art Modell to Baltimore and I was sad. No NFL team in my new home town. I was struck by the passion of the locals knowing the The Browns would return in 1999.

I couldn't help myself, when they started anew in Cleveland I became sucked in and became a fan - drawn in by the local passion! Since then, they have been awful...just plain awful but I will stick with them.

Sure I can admire what Brady does in NE, watch an ageing Kurt Warner light it up in AZ but at heart I am a Browns fan (despite moving to Chicago in 2000) and one day we will win it all and I will be happy. Until then I will enjoy the game and think about what may one day be....a true fan.

....Ok I admit it I was wrong ...I felt Dallas needed to ditch Wade Phillips after those 2 recent losses but Da boys have bounced right back!

..Now if only we can navigate Xmas without being completely pants (as we usually are) we just might (might) actually get to the play-offs!

Looks like things are evening out, Denver have now lost three in a row, looks like I am joining the 'hard luck club' of fans.

New England at Indianapolis on Sunday was great, and I think good for Belichick going for it on fourth down, better to try and win, rather than play it safe all the time.

The Colts and the Saints are very strong, they could go all the way.
I didn't like Belichick's call but I can see why he went for it - gives the Dolphins an outside chance, now we're only two games behind. Big Grin
