iTunes settings

Posted by: BigH47 on 04 December 2008

Not sure where to post this:-
I downloaded a CD yeterday on my iMAC. MY mate sugested AIFF and so it was done , when it came to listen it only recorded the left channel, all settings appear to be on automatic.
Further trials will take place but I wondered if I had missed something .

At the risk of repetition could the AAC AIFF and apple lossless and any relevant settings be explained please?

OK solution to part 1 the interconnect wasn't fully engaged at the iMAC end. I still would appreciate any help re part 2.

Howard,
this link from Macworld might help.

AAC is Apple's compression equivalent of mp3. The Apple lossless is a file that effectively compresses the size of the original sound file but without affecting quality. Whether this is true, as with all things audio, you can find more opinions than mouths to voice them.

I manage two iTunes libraries - one rippped in AAC at 256 for my iPods and another with lossless for streaming wither via Airport Express or via Apple TV

Hope this helps.

Thanks Huwge that sounds like a plan, as I don't have any xPods or the like, so I'll perhaps just try the lossless to "pump" direct to my MAC.

If hard disk space isn't a problem, I'd suggest WAV files.

Why WAV in particular?

There is no conceivable reason to use WAV, its a pc format and it does not support tagging.

Apple losseless is the best for your needs if you intend using itunes.

That has nothing to do with anything. A PC perceives CD files as WAV, a mac will perceive them as AIFF. AIFF however can be tagged.

So if you want to waste harddrive space on a mac use AIFF.

If you want to conserve space use lossless which is an AIFF file zipped up.

If you want to try and appear superior to your peers then simply claim you can hear a difference. The rest of will snigger at you.

OK I'll try lossless next.
