Zappa Questions

Posted by: garyi on 13 March 2003

OK. I have no music right now, but it ain't stopped me buying it!

I got Broadway the hardway, and according to a track listing on the zappa website there should be all these songs on it:
WHY DONOT YOU LIKE ME?
BACON FAT
STOLEN MOMENTS
MURDER BY NUMBERS
JEZEBEL BOY
OUTSIDE NOW
HOT PLATE HEAVEN AT THE GREEN HOTEL
WHAT KIND OF GIRL?
JESUS THINKS YOU'RE A JERK

Now on my vinyl version there is 9 tracks, also listed as being on there, but none of the above tracks. This is mildly annoying as I am listening to the above tracks on line and its quite nice. What gives?

I have also been luckuy to pick up an very nice condition Sleep Dirt, on the discreet label. (still has plastic wrapper on sleve)

I have the CD version which has lyrics on it, I have been informed the vinyl version does not, is this so? (it would be nice if it is so!)

I also got a supurb Grand Wazoo on vinyl as well it dosn't look like its been played, well chuffed

Answers to the above please!

Hi Gary

The CD of Broadway is about double the length of the LP. Always has been. I never seen the tracks you listed released on vinyl. FWIW The CD and the LP sound very similar in any case. On the brightside, on the vinyl you get the 'confinement loaf speech', on CD you don't.

As for Sleep Dirt, yep its instrumental with different drums and mix too. The tracks on the LP are the same as those included on the Lather CD.

Nice addition of Uncle Meat! Now go get Shut Up and Play Your Guitar!!

As another Zappa nutter, congratulations on your forays into the absurd world of poodles, zircon-encrusted tweezers, polymetric improvisation, panties, light blue hair and all of the statistical density that that entails.

To expand on the BtHW question, owning both the vinyl and the cd I can confirm that the vinyl is a different track order with many missing tracks but also bits which don't make it onto the cd. My copy has been mislabelled - both side A - but according to the not-heard-of-in-some-time high saint of UK Zappa weirdness, Fred Thomsett (where is he now?) there's no great increase in value there.

Looking at Gary's collection, it reminds me of what I've been doing - which is trying to build as complete a Zappa vinyl collection as possible (the bootlegs aside - there are hundreds, nay, thousands out there). I notice the Tinseltown Rebellion cd to the top right - is that the recent remastered version or the older cd mix? Just curious. I recently managed to win the two Zappa Au20 releases - 'Apostrophe' and 'One Size Fits All' - well worth the expense (£30 all-in from the states for the pair, plus about £3 postage) and the mix is much better than the late 80's/early 90's cd releases and similar to original vinyl.

Hi Gary,

Your collection is coming on a treat! It's hard knowing when to stop, as there are so many versions of each album, many of them sounding very different from the original mixes and pressings.

I see you've got the YCDTOSA sampler. If you get chance grab a CD copy of volume one, as it contains a mind-blowing 1979 performance of "Don't eat the yellow snow" from Hammersmith Odeon, London. Twenty minutes of madness including 'poetry' recitals from members of the audience.

Also the CD of Broadway has some real gems. "Why don't you like me" is an updated "Tell me you love me", but a bit more 'Devo', and features lyrics suitably modified in order to offend Michael Jackson and the fans of Michael Jackson. Check it out ASAP.

Best,

Mickey

Nick I am fully aware of just how sad this is. However there was a reason behind this.

A. I am sad as stated above.
b. I am trying to complete as much as I can and quite frankly (if you will excuse the pun) I forget which albums I have when bidding on ebay etc, this is a quick visual guide.

BTW The uncle meat is a herring, it only came with one peice of vinyl in, was not a happy bunny.

This is going to be pointless but if any one has any zappa double ups they want to sell on Vinyl please let me know.

I am espcially interested in Chungas Revenge, which I thought was crap but later I found I had on CD and is fantastic, and I was stupid enough not to buy a minted dicreet copy for 15 quid in London the other week.

Hence the visual aid.

You want regrets?

I recently waited too long to move on a still sealed stereo copy of "Freakout" offered at Red Trumpet. It was $50.00. It seemed too good to be true. I'll never know now!

Kicking myself.

There's a European edition of 'Mothers of Prevention' where the cover is a negative of the US (as you appear to have). Different tracks, FWIW...

I seem to have three vinyl copies of 'Ship arriving too late', CBS with 'Shut up and play' 7inch sampler, EMI and Barking Pumpkin.

Thanks for this thread, I've just found Uncle Meat, Chunga's Revenge and a 12 inch picture single I didn't know I had. So that's tomorrow's listening sorted out.

(The first Zappa I bought was 'Orchestral Favorites', I persisted and got 'Shut up and play...', both these were from the bargain bin at the local store, eventually I ended up with 'Sheik Yerbouti' and 'Apostrophe', and off we went. My interest was triggered by seeing the 'City of Tiny Lights' claymation movie on The Old Grey Whistle Test, it just took a while to get oriented...)

Paul don't be so awful, I really need chunga's revenge and uncle meat and you forgot you had um!

Apparently there are two version of mothers of prevention, a US one and a European one, the europe one has three more tracks on it.

A also found out that live in new york has two version my one which is not very desirable (hense why I got it for 7 quid mint) and a version with a bonus track an earlier pressing.

I did however find Joes Garage parts 1 and 2&3 on vinyl this weekend, both prestine for 20 quid the pair. Nice.

The European/US versions have the same side 1, in Europe on side 2 'I don't even care', 'One man one vote' and 'H.R. 2911' replaced 'Porn Wars'. Running times are about the same.

My vinyl 'In New York' doesn't have 'Punky's Whips' listed. But I have the CD too, so that's OK!
