DAC

Stunning. Have mine to do a roadshow with. Just set up and OMG....sorry have to head back and listen... Smile

That makes sense. I'm at work and should have waited for a closer look as Vespa is in/out. Still don't see a VOL control on the unit so via computer control. Bus or outboard supply with what looks like a barrel connector. Seems a bit steep but it is Swiss and performance will dictate value as always so not much to say until it's here except it's nice to have more viable options. Same JET tech as TC and Minerva etc but implimentation, as always, matters.

It says in the blurb 'infra red remote control for volume', I wonder if the remote will work with the DACII/Minerva?
Posted on: 03 October 2009 by js
I'm not posting again til I get home, LOL. I guess the remote looks to be optional. Minerva I tested didn't have an IR receiver so probably not.

Thankfully we didn't win. If you ask Chicagoans aside from the President, Mayor, political supporters, and Oprah there was almost no support for the Olympics in Chicagoland. It would have been a disaster.
Posted on: 03 October 2009 by mudwolf
oh the LA olympics were great, people carpooled, great to see a couple events and some art events.

but I"m glad it went to South America and Brazil especially. I bet it will be a spectacular event.

On DACs I'm still considering options, won't move till the new year tho.

Sure wuldn't have hurt biz. Jobs are good but the debt wouldn't be. Retailers would definitely have benefit.

I wish I could tell you, but as I've said in a previous post, I haven't had my hands on a DAC yet to play with - but can't wait to do so! I'm really looking forward to trying it out with everything from a DVD5 through a Meridian CD transport to my Vaio laptop via an appropriate USB or Firewire convertor.

Richard,
given the large number of posts in several threads speculating about the new DAC's capabilities, compatibility with other sources/PSUs and technical issues such as bit rates etc, could you suggest to the DAC team that they write an FAQ on these topics for this forum?

Would certainly help those of us new to HDD based audio who are considering buying DAC and may save some of us from making potentially costly mistakes!

@ Jo Sharp: There is an excellent White Paper on the product page... Reading it will answer most questions... There are even recommendations for USB to S/PDIF converters in the White Paper...

The only thing missing is information how to make your PC/MAC sing with the right settings. But there are tons of information on various forums specialized on computer audio...

Benchmark have a very useful wiki. Would it be too much to expect NAIM to be as helpful?
Posted on: 04 October 2009 by js
Their dealers are expected to help and hopefully to greater extent that that page.

From everytihng I have read USB and spdif just don't appear the best way to connect a dac, async USB or firewire seem to have a technical advantage.

Though I haven't really loved any of the USB connected DACs, we've gotten VG results from USB drives in the playback loop so I can't say if the issue in what is effectively a soundcard, whether it's USB driven or how effectively they're configured. Of course there are more instructions in soundcard operation than in data transfer but USB is also about to get faster so as usual, computer tech is a moving target. May have something to do with Naim's approach of their DAC not being interface dependant for clock jitter.

DHT, I think Weiss is VG on info with their products. Talk about players, rippers for MAC/pc and ASIO in PC etc. Many of the things I've always agreed with on that type of interface.

Update...

I have been working on the system for two days to try and understand it and improve it. Man O man, I can put my hand on my heart and say playing music I know very well that I am hearing things that I have NEVER heard before. Information, instruments, intonation and emotion in spades, buckets and more....Guess you can tell I am excited. Naim are to be congratulated on making the huge leap they have. Truly special. Smile

Oh and thanks...thanks for making me leave work late every night this week. As Thomas Edison said, I never worked a day in my life, it was all fun!

Chris

Having herad one properly, you can't possibly comment on here - that's breaks the cardinal rule of the prerequisite for informed/wild speculation. Razz

Serioulsy though, it sounded spectacularly good at Salisbury and will likely be my first new piece of Nauim kit for quite a while if works as well at home and I even have a spare XPS2 for it Smile!

Cheers

Jim

Are you a trade member then Chris ?

I am the New Zealand Distributor. And yes, I am allowed to get excited about something Naim does. I am a person too! Smile

Chris, thanks for the very promissing reports. Have you been able to compare the performance of the Dac depending on the transport, HDX etc.

I am sure that many of us have some sort of budget constraints, and for me that is that I am willing to pay around 3-5000 usd for a complete source. The one I was looling at was mainly the Majik DS (fantastic with the new power supply "Dynamik"). But after reading about the Dac, I also would like to evaluate that option, so how would the Dac work with a decent transport (I am thinking about for example a Linn Karik, Linn Ikemi etc)?
Posted on: 09 October 2009 by james n
Jsut curious - just good to know who is selling the product or buying the product.
