Uniti and Apple - a 'iUniti' check!

Posted by: NewMike on 13 August 2010

Can't quite believe I'm posting this but...
Uniti well liked for the one box neatness and radio etc (I fancy a SX or Supernait). Household is Mac based and I have lossess ripped music on my big Mac that streams via Logitect Duet.
Read through the posts here and I want to check that the Naim will play nicely with the Mac. If I'm right I can add a bit of software so the Uniti copes with the format on the Mac. I assume you can pick the tracks etc either via iTunes or some application on an iPad or iPhone (Must stop buying Mac stuff!).
In together words are there issues I should know about? Asked a dealer but he said he was a PC man and thought Nains were too!

you can use Elgato software as UPnP server on a Mac, and connect to it from the Uniti. For audio streaming it is free of charge. Convert Apple Lossless to wav real-time to make those files playable.

Elgato works fine with the Uniti. And coverts Apple lossless on the fly to WAV.
However, I have to warn if your Mac is on a wireless connection and the Uniti is also taking a wireless connection from the router there can be drop-outs. With me it's been hit and miss.
I think Naim themselves advise two wireless connections are not ideal - but don't take that as fact because it's from memory!

Hi I have a Uniti and MBPro which Has my itunes on I use EyeConnect as the server and the Uniti renders the stream very well indeed. I can control it using the Uniti menu or I use the plug player app on my iphone all works seamlessly. This is on a wireless network and i have not had any drop outs while playing music, surfing and downloading. One word of advice is that not all routers are made equal and I think some of the cheaper models are particularly prone/troublesome to drop out. I use an Apple Time-Capsule integrated router in my network using the 5Ghz instead of the 2.4Ghz transmission. All my CD rips are in AIFF format which the uniti will happily play.

Thanks for the info.
I've not heard the Uniti but preferred the SX sound to the 5i and don't really need a CD anymore. Should check out a Qute - interesting the chat on here about adding a poweramp to the Uniti...
