Yikes, major earthquake at 4.35am, after things settled it was off to work to see if the shop was in a worse state than my home....for a 7.1 quake only 30km away I was pleased that we only lost a jar of jam at home....at work things were worse but not major.
It was a scary thing to experience....rushed in to the kids and had time to wake them up and still sit and wait the thing out..
One speaker took a dive to another speaker, a few records on the floor and some paper work in a mess but over all we escaped very lightly from such a major quake.

It was certainly rock'n roll at 4.35am this morning.
Being the usual insomniac I am, I was up & on the computer when an impact & sound resembling a freight train hit the house.
I'd love to pretend we were very calm & assembled under the nearest door frame or stout table as you are supposed to do when such things happen. Instead the whole family woke up & we wandered round in blind panic as the house "rollercoastered" around. "rollercoastered" isn't an exaggeration. All very scary.
They are predicting fairly sizeable aftershocks. we've had 21 plus so far.
Glad the shops alright PureHifi.
Cheers

Yes, hope things aren't too bad for you folks & no one's been injured.
I confess I was surprised to learn you'd had a big 'quake there - didn't realise you were subject to them.

Glad to hear you guys are OK. I was in Christchurch a few years ago and it is hard to imagine it being in an earthquake zone. I hope the aftershocks are not too scary and life gets back to normal for you all soon.
Cheers

Best wishes to our Kiwi cousins.
No fatalities it seems, but some lucky escapes from what I've seen on TV.

News here a few weeks ago on a major study of historical tectonics along San Andreas fault says we get 7+ every 140 years and we're over due in SoCal.
Good luck down under. Just think of it as releasing the stress.

Thanks for the comments, I am amazed that some of us came through relatively unscathed and some have had escapes from usually deadly situations.

Watching the walls bend, jump, and twist is always fun. 7.1! Shit! About 19 miles away. That epi must have been very deep. Otherwise, you would not be on the net right now.
god bless,
Marc
who has been in thousands of quakes.

Epicenter equals most concentrated point or where the quake originated from.
If the quake was 6.2 miles deep? You were lucky. When it get up to a mile or closer to the surface is when all hell breaks loose.
My home in Nevada was built to withstand 7.1..
If we were to get the quake you got? The house may have been fine due to the depth of the quake. By chance the 7.1 was a mile to half mile deep? The house would have crumbled and taken me and my family with it.

Just saw your post here!
First thing I did was check the lounge; no damage thankfully :-)
Then, due to the power cut, I flicked off the mains breaker to the HiFi. Then I checked the garage; Porker OK except a bike fell on it, slight ding :-(
Deco lamp and art vase busted, new paving has shifted, block fence sunk/leaning but apart from that, nothing to worry about compared to many others out there.
Now for the short term economic impact...
BTW, those not based here, the 'quake we had was the same on the Richter as Haiti.
Houses on firm ground did OK but many of those on sandy substrata or reclaimed land are now basically unliveable.

James, the same thing with our Northridge quake. Houses on firm ground did well, those in soft low valley grounds like San Fernando Valley and southwest over by the beaches had lots of damage.
