How do you clean your LP12???

Posted by: Gram Parsons on 16 February 2004

Hei, please can you tell me, how you clean your LP12? What do you use for example to clean the inner platter, the platter and the steel top plate, a dry or damp cloth......? Any suggestions...?? Confused

In the interests of safety, I think 'reductionist' should have pointed out the necessity of unplugging your LP12 from the mains before attacking it with the pressure washer.

You should also avoid pointing the lance directly at the cartridge, as they have a habit of ripping the stylus off at the root (or even the arm if your unlucky enough to get the angle wrong Frown )

Failing that, I find a slightly moist lint-free cloth is adequate for day-to-day cleaning.

Very carefully and I find that the lid, although frowned on by many on the forum for "sound" reasons Wink helps to keep the platter and top plate clear of dust. The lid also gets a good clean with a dry duster every so often and I always give it a zap with a zero stat pistol as I found out a while ago that a charged lid reduced the tracking force of the TikTok by about 1 gram. I wonder if this could be the reason why so many on this forum prefer the sound of the LP12 with the lid off?.

I have removed the lid hinges and use the lid as a dust cover only, when I am not playing records.
As for cleaning, I use anti-static plastic cleaner (sold as 99 here) on the lid.

The platter gets a wipe over with a vacuum brush (on the least powerful setting) and the top plate gets a wipe with a damp clean cloth.

This only happens about every 6months (lazy).

Now, all this is about as 'nerdy' as you can get and I hope nobody I know finds out about me discussing LP12 cleaning on the interweb thingy; but ............ for cleaning the lid, I find a double thickness of mansize tissues folded twice to form a pad and lightly moistened (with water) is excellent. Removes all the dust and haze that builds up and helps prevent static from forming. Zero-Stat is thereby rendered redundant Smile

Ahoy there Cecil Ingram Connor, and welcome back from 'the other side'.

The platter is lacquered; so is best not attacked with anything abrasive.

Personally; I've always just dusted my LP 12's with a paint brush.

I run the belt through some 'Mr Sheen' or similar, sprayed on a kitchen towel - then a dry bit. Clean the drive pulley with tape head cleaner.

If you haven't already done so, try running it with no baseboard.

Lid off, of course.

I always run my LP12 with the lid on and down - seems to me we need a survey to establish the exact percentage of people who espouse each option and why?

You dont.

You buy a CDS 3

Forgive me being a little off-beat here, I suspect Jonathan is suggesting that ownership of CDS3 renders unecessary the need to play LP's. Cool

Cleaning for performance, or appearance?

I only do the former for the most part, and here's the regular checklist: -

Clean the belt, motor pulley, inner platter (where the belt runs and where it contacts outer pulley) and outer platter (where it contacts inner platter) with isopropyl alcohol.

Clean mat with parcel tape to raise nap and remove dust.

Carefully unplug and re-make cartridge connections (yearly or 6-monthly at most).

Listen to mat both ways up, listen to belt in all 4 orientations.

Enjoy!

Andy.

P.S. the best thing to clean the top plate is a cloth dampened with baby oil - honest!

errr you can ask, but no you can't have them, James. Why? I still play mine on my own LP12.

My contention was that Jonathan appeared to be suggesting...

Three easy steps to ruin your LP12:

i) "I run the belt through some 'Mr Sheen' or similar, sprayed on a kitchen towel"

ii) "Clean the belt with isopropyl alcohol".

iii) "Clean mat with parcel tape to raise nap"

Count.d,

As the owner of the same LP12 for the last 14 years or more and as witnessed by those that have heard my LP12, I respectfully suggest that your post is bollocks Wink

..except for the Mr. Sheen bit.

In fact what is Linn's suggested method for cleaning the mat?

Indeed, what is the reason a new mat sounds better than an old one - one and the same!

To quote (cut and paste from LP12 owners manual): -

"MAT. The felt mat can be cleaned with masking tape.
If the mat becomes really dusty, you can beat it like a carpet or rug. If you have a problem with static and the mat clings to your records, you can use some doublesided tape to secure it."

But cleaning a CDS3 is even worse.
