Apogee speakers and Naim amps

Posted by: Constantin on 23 April 2003

Did anyone tried to match the ribbons (i.e.Apogee Stage) with Naim amplification? It will work?
Or the better would be to match some hybrid ribbon speakers (Neat, Red Rose, etc.), in order to get the benefit of utmost transparency in the mid upper registry
What do you suggest? Right now I have Linn Kan mkV speakers and try to up-grade at this level.

Constantin,

Everything I've read about Apogees is that they dip to around 1 ohm impedance. I think a Naim amp will have problems with this!

Frank.
All opinions are my own and do not reflect the opinion of any organisations I work for, except where this is stated explicitly.

Is Stage a later, smaller model? If so they are somewhat easier to drive than the earlier models with an impedance around 4 ohm. If they are an older, big model I believe you will need a bigger amp.

Thanks guys,
Bjorne I think they have 2 ohms impedance, 1995 model.
Anyway what other possibilities would be to get the same /most closest result?

Apogee speakers developed a reputation - fairly or not - as amp - killers. Here in the US they seemed to be most frequently paired with very powerful Krell and Levinson amps that could double as arc welders. One factor to consider is that Apogee is out of business although there is a lively user group and some commercial support. Take a look at the Apogee Users website and the Ribbon Speakers site for more information on parts and support.

If you're sold on the sound of panel speakers you might consider Quad electrostatics. A couple of friends with reliable judgement in such matters think the new Quad electrostatics are among the best speakers ever, even when judged by flat - earth standards.
