Question for Dynaudio owners

Posted by: skraft on 22 October 2003

At what point with what kit do you Dynaudio owners get to clipping? I'm running a CDX/XPS, 102/Hi/PSC, 135 Chromes into Contour 1.8mkII - and I start to clip at 10:30-11. Seems quite low to me. You?

Ken,

Remember that your Nait 5 has adjustable levels
for each input, so the relative position of your
volume control has no easy comparison to the 102
pre-amp. That being said, size of room, type of
music played and bass content will affect how much
amplifiers will clip into certain speakers. Dynaudios
work very well with Naim, and up to the clipping point,
sound very fine indeed.

I take it, Bryan, that it wouldn't be completely out of the question for the electronics to clip at a medium high volume with these speakers.

I tried a pair 1.1s and found the same experience. Also replaced the front with a Nait 2 and an Arcam CDP. Same. Nothing blown on the speakers. They just seem to clip early. Even with 135s driving them. Strange.

I run the 1.8Mk2s off a 140 and get driven out of the room well before 10:00. Have not noticed clipping but usually have volume @ about 8:30-8:45, which is plenty for my room (about 75 cu m).

I am driving my dyna 25 special with 112/150, normally listening with the volumn dial pointing at 10 to 11 Oçlock, maybe my room is small and the spk is easier to driver than the 1.8, they sound pretty good, no clipping at all.

How do you know you're "clipping", and if so - what?

I've heard 1.8 mid/bass units bang their end stops (not good) from my 135s as well as my (earlier) NAP180 giving up on serious bass transients. Eleven o'clock is bleedin' loud on CD - perhaps it's your ears!

Graeme,

I admit it's pretty loud. But it's not as loud as ear-splitting. At least I don't think so. The speakers begin to distort. I assume it's clipping. At 9-10 oclock they sing. Hmm.

I run 1.8 mk II's and have had them with a 140 and a 250. The latter shuts down before the speakers misbehave(say 25 mins high energy music) at just about tenable listening levels and I can only think that something is awry in the environment as mine have never resorted to clipping and have handled everything thrown at them.

Mind you, 10:30 from a CD via on a 52/82 in to a 250 in a room 22' x 12' is more than enough for me. The room starts to move around.

I can't help but think that stands and supports may need checking or something is 'off' somewhere.

I tempted to ask how you can stand the sound at the levels you suggest.

I used to own a pair of 1.3 mk2's that were driven by a Krell KSA 100s. I found the speakers to hit their end stops far too early and was very annoyed by that. I found the sound prior to the poping noise to be wonderful, but could'nt stand them for not letting me crank it up. I sold the speakers very quickly and decided never to consider Dynaudio again! The bitter feeling was not helped by the dealer refusing to refund my money. He also tried to tell me that the Krell could not drive the little 1.3's as it could'nt provide enough current - utter crap. Anyway all that non naim stuff is gone now and I never have to worry about a miss match between equipment again.

Mario.
