Speakers for Classic Line

Posted by: achandoke on 14 March 2003

I am looking for help on speaker combinations for the New Classic (Reference) Line. I purchased a system for my brother, it is the following

Cd5(to be CDX2 within 1 week)/202/fc2/200. My brother and I auditioned the N804 which was an excellent and transparent speaker, but lacking bass. I was getting a loud clicking when I turned up the stereo and felt one of the midranges was bad. I no longer believe this. I was listening to the system with Vienna Acoustics Beethoven, and I got the same noise. I feel its the 200's lack of current producing this noise at higher volumes. The Beethoven sounded muffled when compared to the N804, but they offered much more tigher bass. I was surprised by this. I expected the Beethoven's midrange and top end to be superior to the N804.

I may get a 250 for that system. The 200 didnt seem to be up to the task of driving more demanding speakers. Is this the experience of others?

Are there other speakers that people could recommend? There are not too many dealers where my brother and I live, and I was just asking to learn from the experience of others.

Thanks for your time.

Achandoke,

Go and dem a pair of SL2's, they are one of the most open transparent speakers I have heard. Your sistem should be good enough for the SL2's if not then there is also the allae's to consider.

Achandoke-

Two suggestions. First, get a Hicap and a PSC for the 202. A lot of the limitations you're hearing are from a FC2 trying to power a 202. The two PSCs will make the 200 sound considerably more powerful.

Second: Speakers are very difficult, since they interact with the room so much and are so personal a choice. I'd try Allae's, SBLs, and SL2s, if they're in reach, although I frankly think SL2s need more in front of them. Other speakers that should work well include ProAc, Neat, and, if you have the room, Vandersteen.

Best Regards,

Bob
