night listening better?

Posted by: woody on 28 October 2003

I've noticed over the past few years that any hifi system seems to sound significantly better at night/in the evening...any ideas why, or is it purely psychosomatic?

Woody,

Its all down to the quality of your mains supply. In the early evening mains quality is quite poor. As the night progresses and fewer people use the electical grid the quality of your mains supply increases and therefore sound quality increases.

My sistem sounds quite poor before 7 pm and gets better as the evening progresses.

NB,

I thought it may be this - but I'm at home now listening to my sistem and I've heard it sound better...presumably during the day there should be lower load on mains - possibly more so than at night?

I live in a residental area, far from any industries. In the evening the electrical power consumption GOES UP, because everybody is at home, cooks, washes, watch TV, uses the home computer etc. etc.

In the evening music in my home sounds better. According to the above this can't be because of "better mains", as it is NOT better at this time of the day.

My guess is that it is psychological, either the darkness in the room enhances the other senses or simply tiredness makes me less critical of what I'm hearing! Or something else.

I live in Camden Town, London.
No industry to speak of as it's mainly residential area but lots of bars/cafes/resturants and services and media companies.

Woody,

as Johan suggests it depends on who is using the grid at the same time as you are. In the daytime demand may be greater due to business and industry.

Just put concrete paving slabs under each speaker stand...my god, what a difference! More detail, taughter bass. It's as if the system has been lifted a level...can't wait to hear it tonight! :-)

Alex,

dunno...mind you, they cost 40p each - and we had a load spare. A mate tells me Mana do some bases for speakers for about £175. I know what she'll prefer based on that!

Oh - and she's back tomorrow so I'll post what she says/does Eek

I'll find out tomorrow...I'm sure she'll take it as further proof of my (and, in fact, man's) insanity. To be honest I think she'll be more cross about me reclaiming the hifi stand and relocating her bottles. Still, if she will leave me to my own devices she should be grateful I didn't buy a turntable (which I had threatened...)

Just don't make a point of showing off the stand and patio slabs . Mrs Woody would probably (if she's like my missus) kick up more of a fuss if you did. Just have the music on when she arrives and see if she notices any difference herself. If she does then say, well I did this. Once she agrees that it sounds better how can she then tell you to move it all back.

Stevie,

Just remembered - she's coming back tomorrow morning when I'm at work so she'll see it before she hears it. Doh!

A sickie is needed then. That way she will be concerned for your ill health and won't notice your upgrades. Also the music will be gently playing in the background as it will aid your recuperation!

Stevie,

like your thinking...and of course I'd get brownie points for being at home when she arrived...but I really have to be at work tomorrow Frown

Then the only option you have is to leave a CD on repeat just before you leave for work.

The only thing is that she will go strait to the rack to turn the CDP off and notice that her coke bottle is missing Eek

You could pop to B&Q this evening and buy some shelves and make her a drinks shelf. That way she may see the shelf before anything else.

Unfortunately:

a) it's not just the coke bottle, it's all the drinks - including the crystal decanter
b) I don't do DIY - probably cause more damage than good

Don't forget to put her bestest CD in the whole wide world on repeat before you do that!

My system always seems best in the wee small hours which is when most of my listening is done. I had always put it down to:
1. The generally calm and peaceful atmosphere then.
2. The family’s all in bed so I can relax safe in the knowledge that I’m not going to be disturbed by a brat asking questions about calculus or Shakespeare (jeez aren’t kids so demanding sometimes).
3. The few wee drams I’ve consumed which definitely seem to enhance my powers of hearing!

Maybe some strategically placed flowers/chocolates/whatever to greet Mrs W will be in order?
