Best Live Al***s

Posted by: Chris Kelly on 16 November 2006

SloopJohnB mentioned listening to "Running on Empty" last night and described it as one of the best live albums ever. I agree. I know a lot of folk prefer studio to live albums but I have always been partial to live, even knowing that they are often "prettied up" in post production. In no particular order I can think of these as particular favourites:

"Get Yer Yayas out" Rolling Stones
"Live Bullet" and "Nine Tonight" Bob Seger
"Reach Up and Touch the Stars" Southside Johnny and the Asbury Dukes
"Wheels of Fire disc2" Cream
the aforementioned "Running on Empty"
"Ummagumma" Pink Floyd
"Live75-85" Bruce Springsteen
"Fandango" ZZ Top
"On the Road" Traffic

I'm sure there are lots more. Your favourites?

BB King - Live at Cooks County Jail
Last Exit - Cassette Recordings
Buddy Guy and Junior Wells - Smoking TNT and drinking dynamite
Burning Spear - Live in Paris
Material -= Live in Japan

JCS
BB King and Guy/Wells both excellent. Not familiar with the others so must investigate.

Thanks!

Hey Chris, from your list of favourites I'm not sure you'd like any of them. The Pete Namlook is ambient/electronic with a bit of drum and bass thrown in, the Material is harmolodic, Last Exit is described as heavy metal/avant-garde jazz and Burning Spear is roots reggae

Crikey, a whole tranche that I had forgotten!
Allmans especially bad oversight on my part.
Lynyrd Skynerd "One From the Road" is another I forgot. And "Live Rust" Neil Young.
I agree with Solo Acoustic too. Did you seem him at the palladium or at Drury lane? He had David Linley at the latter which was fabulous.

The best live records are clearly better than the best studio ones, if you ask me.

    Some recent favourites:
    - Van Morrison: Live at the Grand Opera House Belfast
    - Alison Krauss + Union Station: Live
    - Aretha Franklin - Live at Fillmore West

    Albert King - Blues Power

I have a singel(!) from that one.

James Brown: Live at the Apollo

There is actually two. The first one, and the most famous, is from 1962-63, the second from 1967-68. Both are VERY good!

    Hi Chris,

No sadly I didn't. Even more galling was the fact that one of my best golfing pals went and didn't mention it 'cos he didn't realise we had similar taste - doh!

    Agree about Skynryd btw.

    Ryan,

I left this off only because the recording I had was pretty grim. Is the CD any better?

    Regards,

    Steve

A Southside Johnny reference! You got great taste (although it is "Jukes" not "Dukes")! His Hearts of Stone album is one of my all-time favorites. Of course, I love Springsteen as well, and also love both Seger albums mentioned.

    Doh! Typo rather than ignorance!
Southside was here very recently but unfortunately I was away. I used to work for a company based in Oceanport NJ so was quite familiar with the Asbury Park area.
Hearts of Stone is indeed a great album, but I like all their stuff and much regret not having caught them live in their prime.

i've only got vinyl edition and its sounds pretty good to me. Getting a bit dirty now, but had it for years. It is a superb lp though.

Another of course would have to be "if you want blood"......everyone should have a bit of AC/DC!!!

Or if you wish to be a bit more contemporary.....Scab Dates by the Mars Volta (one of the most eclectic and talented bands around imo)

Deep Purple - Made in Japan
    Nils Lofgren - Live Acoustic
    Genesis - Seconds Out
