Best Live Al***s

Posted by: Chris Kelly on 16 November 2006

SloopJohnB mentioned listening to "Running on Empty" last night and described it as one of the best live albums ever. I agree. I know a lot of folk prefer studio to live albums but I have always been partial to live, even knowing that they are often "prettied up" in post production. In no particular order I can think of these as particular favourites:

"Get Yer Yayas out" Rolling Stones
"Live Bullet" and "Nine Tonight" Bob Seger
"Reach Up and Touch the Stars" Southside Johnny and the Asbury Dukes
"Wheels of Fire disc2" Cream
the aforementioned "Running on Empty"
"Ummagumma" Pink Floyd
"Live75-85" Bruce Springsteen
"Fandango" ZZ Top
"On the Road" Traffic

I'm sure there are lots more. Your favourites?

It's the answer to all best of... questions. Aparently. Winker Roll Eyes

Of course - most of these are only available on VHS, which is a shame. The first collection is on CD though. Winker

That's "Reach Up and Touch the Sky" by Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes. Indeed a fine record, but it really annoys me that the CD version leaves off one track, which is of course my favourite, and I refuse to buy it until such time as their monumental version of "Stagger Lee" is restored to its rightful place in the running order. Bah!

Other fave lives of mine are Van Morrison's Too Late to Stop Now, Allmans Fillmore East, Talking Heads' Stop Making Sense (the expanded remaster) and Peter Gabriel's PG Plays Live.

Quite right on all counts. The vinyl version is definitely preferrable but is now in a storage room along with other relics of my past! can't/won't justify adding a tt to my current set up. heresy to any, but there you are.

I think SSJ and the AJ are well overdue a Rhinostyle proper remastering.

SJB and Steve S1 beat me to Rory! But I couldn't see a list like this go past without:

Portishead : Live NYC Roseland

The vinyl version is simply outstanding.

Last gig of their last tour, sounds fantastic as all Beta Band stuff does, one of the best bands of the last ten years.

'1969 live' is much better than 'Kansas City'.
