Songs of Hate & Pain Vol.1
Posted by: Redmires on 19 June 2010
I like a happy love song as much as anyone but nothing moves me more than a song of hate and pain. A few that spring to mind ....
You're So Vain - Carly Simon
At Seventeen - Janis Ian
How Do You Sleep - John Lennon
Sexy Sadie - The Beatles
You've Got a Nerve - Rod Stewart
Positively 4th Street - Bob Dylan
One - U2
Strange Fruit - Billie Holiday
Stop - Sam Brown
Nothing Compares 2 U - Sinead O'Conner
Jagged Little Pill - Alanis Morissette (whole album !)
Most things by Annie Lennox
A fair few female vocalists there. Perhaps only women bleed, as Alice Cooper sang.
Suggestions for songs with bite are welcome, to fill up a compilation album. As are suggestions for artists/albums to check out.

Anything off The Cure's "Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me". Actually, anything by The Cure, really.

Must agree, 'Hurt' from that album, or even Johnny Cash's cover version.
Peter Hammill would be there for me too, 'The Lie (Bernini's St. Theresa)' from 'The Silent Corner and the Empty Stage' would be a good start.
Both are on the NIN and Hammill are on the pain side more than hate.

Didn't Kelis do a song called 'I hate you so much'? I think that might qualify.

Quasi - California
So good.
***************************
Life is dull, life is grey:
At its best it's just OK.
But I'm happy to report
Life is also short.
So I find myself back in California -
I'm a coolie for the tourists,
those happy Epicureans:
Evil spectres from my own suburban upbring.
As I reveal points of interest, I can chat so pleasantly,
But it's hard to be cheerful when you feel so hopeless
And there's no reason for this dark mood.
It will pass; it will return, but will I ever learn ?
And the children of privilege begging for my spare change.
Do they need my assistance to purchase their intoxicants,
or would they best be served a swift kick
Slowly sinking in the vast ambivalent sea of California

A great choice - Françoise Hardy is highly underrated in England and a great singer.

When I was waiting in a bar, where were you?
When I was buying you a drink, where were you?
When I was crying at home in bed, where were you?

I'm sure there are many Nick Cave examples.

"Song for the dumped" : Ben Folds Five
Lots of hate'n'pain on this tune.
1,2,3,4
So you wanted
to take a break
slow it down some and
have some space
well fuck you too
Give me my money back
give me my money back
you bitch
I want my money back
And don't forget
And don't forget
to give me back my black T-shirt
I wish I hadn't bought you dinner
right before you
dumped me on your front porch
Give me my money back
give me my money back
you bitch
I want my money back
And don't forget
And don't forget
to give me back my black T-shirt
hey, hey
So you wanted
to take a break
slow it down some and
have some space
Give me my money back
give me my money back
you bitch
I want my money back
And don't forget From this album.
