Posted by: BigH47 on 14 February 2009

Just to finish off a really great week, not.I went to wake up the iMAC this morning, it responed with a pop and tripped the downstairs ring, switching off the hifi et all. iMAC is now dead, it didn't blow the 10A fuse in the powerlead mind you.

Very similar, though this time can hear the DVD drive? make it's couple of start up noises and then nothing.
Man at authorised repair centre apologised profusely, has put on a priority ticket.
He said he could smell something burnt/burning inside. "It may be a short", "it may be the power supply we fitted last time", "I'll let you know soonest".

munch I'll wait and see what they have to say, after they have looked inside. If it's the same thing ,then e-mails and letters will start to fly.

Howard,
new stuff announced today, get them to replace it with a new iMac if you can. Sorry to hear of your woes, my experience is limited to the portable macs and they have performed above and beyond. My old iBook G3 is doing sterling service for my Dad.
Good luck,
Huw

What a total bummer. I was in the Apple Store in Kingston today because my iPhone has developed a glitch which stops it ringing when I get an incoming call. In other words, it's totally useless. The "Genius Bar" guy who saw me arranged for it to be replaced FoC, even though it is just outside warranty. Couldn't fault the service.

I hate to hear these stories because it's a bugger for you but may also put switchers off taking the plunge. The brand new stuff announced today looks great too.

If I haven't said so before, I had a slight glitch with my i-mac which wouldn't start up due to a loose ram chip. The folks at Brent Cross Genius Bar were extremely helpful & I'd recommend that route for warranty problems.

I'm not sure that repairs should be considered appropriate if you can smell burning from your machine which in itself could potentially cause problems later on ie outside warranty period.

Good luck in sorting this mess out.

Theres only two things go wrong in an imac the logic board and the power supply.

So logic board next then.
Posted on: 04 March 2009 by BigH47
OK prize time ..... and the winner is ........garyi.

"We've ordered a new logic board" say Solutions Inc.

I will be enquiring on Friday (hopefully) when I pick it up, about the likely hood of a recurrence and what to if it happens again.

I did have a small chance at feedback, as I was asked by Apple to do a post fault survey. See if I get any response to the negative comments.

Thursday afternoon update:-
new logic board fitted. Phone call to say "it fails the tests " so another 'new' logic board ordered should be there tomorrow.

You would think they would just give in an give you a new one.

Yes let's hope so.
I believe the tests are over a few hours.

I was reading earlier on the macforum and came across someone who had bought a refurbed imac. apple would not swap for new one as he had bought refurbed but they would give him a refund.

I'm sorry to hear of these MacProblems - I think the quality control dropped when production moved to mainland China. However, Apple should make sure it is fixed.

We found more problems with Intel Macs than we used to find with PowerPC MACs, but that probably has nothing to do with the change of processor.

When you get it back, you should insert your Mac OS X Install disc 1 that came with your Mac and hold letter D at boot. This will load the hardware test.

After language selection, use ctrl-L keyboard combination to get it to loop mode, select extended test and let it run afor a few hours. You can end the test with the same keyboard combo or it will stop if it finds an error.

If that checks out OK then you should be fault free from then on.

I would be offering the price difference to get a new machine, if it come to that.

Thanks for that ROTF, I'll give it a go. Are they the sort of tests the shop will do, do you know?
Posted on: 05 March 2009 by Guido Fawkes
Either that or they'll use something like

TechTool Pro.

It checks

Drives
Drive Mechanism
USB Functionality
Memory
Video RAM
CPU
Firewire Functionality
Video Geometry Screens
Network Interface
Cache
Clock
FPU (Mathematics)

and some other stuff. However, what comes with the computer will do a good job.

Might be a good move seeing as the new iMac is out with better memory/hard drive options ect.

I am now considering a minimac as it now comes with more hd/ram/ and the better than outgoing model, wireless N options.

I am still MAC less, apparently the part was in yesterday but whether it was fitted and not tested or failed I don't know as the guy didn't phone back.
Stay tuned for more "enthralling? episodes".

Monday upgate:-
New part fitted (another PSU I think) still fails diagnostics.
Solutions Inc are going to order a new PSU and logic board and change them together , some thought about one board bringing the other down??????

On advice of SI we have contacted Apple UK with a list of problems , and asked to start the refund procedure see what reposnse that has.
It is better for us to do it as "Apple listens to their customers, more than their agents".

Time will tell.

You will take this as little concelation, but it sounds more like this apple partner is a knob rince.

The one I have used have been very efficent the two times I had to use them.

Time has already told - I would have freaked by now if I hadn't either been supplied with a new machine or full refund.

Seems crazy to me that you should be asked to hang on in there in some act of charity Confused

Enough is enough.Demand a refund and go elsewhere.
Posted on: 10 March 2009 by Guido Fawkes
I once bought an ex-display iMac for John Lewis - while I had some lunch they ran thorough tests on it. It was an old G3 machine. Got a good discount too. It still works without problem.

I agree with the others Howard - demand your money back, the shop has let you down. If you go elsewhere I'm sure you'll find better service and a Mac that works. I'd definitely let Apple know about this shop and just how useless they are.

I really hope you get one that works.

I had friends that bought an early iMac flat panel, it was in the downstairs where I sleep when I visit. I said this is really noisy and I don't think right. Several months later my same comment, Frank called his tech guy and it was serviced, had to take out what was inside and the tech said good thing it was about to go down and loose everything. It's been working like a champ ever since and that was years ago.

I have to add, to no cost to Frank. tho he tipped his tech I"m sure. The guy gives great service and at no cost often.

Did you pay with a credit card Howard?
If so contact them & start the Consumer Credit Protection Act refund process.
This can be an effective way to get crap retailers moving.

Wednesday report, there is nothing to report. Parts which should have arrived Tuesday didn't, not until late today did they come, some over night service that!

Answer to our e-mail, Apple customer service, basically said "nothing to do with us, speak to Applecare" We have raised a customer complaint with said Applecare.
Machines are given 3 chances to be fixed and then a case for a refund is dealt with.An argument could be made that 3 chances have already happened.

BTW we paid by debit card not credit card.
