Cheap HDX?

Posted by: Bas V on 21 November 2010

Hi all,
I was thinking of adding a HD-player to my system. I am looking for a single unit to which I can copy my CD's via my CD-player or via it's own CD-player. Just like a Naim HDX. I don't want to work with a PC or something like that, just one unit with a HD from which I can play directly in my present system. Any suggestions? I cannot find a serious alternative to the HDX (which is waaaaay to expensive for me).
Regards, Bas

Hi Bas,

How about the Olive 3 HD music streamer ?

It's got a CD slot to rip your CD's and an onboard 500GB HD to store them.
It also has a touch-screen to navigate and show CD cover-art.
(although it comes with a remote and you also get a free app with it to use an I-pod touch as remote)

It doesn't look as good as a HDX and may not sound as good either, but then it comes at a price of around €1200,- Smile

regards,
Alco

Shame, a UnitiServe + SUPERNAIT using one of your HICAPs would be a formidable option.

According to the comics, the Olive takes a lot of beating at its price point.

Agreed, but Bas asked for a cheap(er) solution.

€ 2500,- instead of € 6500,- is cheaper Winker

That's true Robbert, but the € 2500,- is for the UnitiServe only.
I assume Bas won't like to change his current amplification for a SuperNait. (I wouldn't)

Headless MAC mini (look on the Apple store for refurbished ones) and an ipod touch or iPhone as a remote.

Yep that would do it

Headless Mini + M2tech Young D/A standing in for an NDac.

Or Vortexbox as a player into Young?

You might be interested in RipNAS products.

Can you add previously ripped files to the RipNas?

I'd be very surprised if it wasn't the case. I can't be authoritative on the subject though, as I've never used a RipNAS product.

Ripnas is just a piece of software that runs under windows and very good it is too.

So yes you cab add your own files.

I was indeed looking for something like the Olive. I do however find very mixed reviews (form very bad to very good) and still find it rather pricey. Are there really so little options? Squeezebox e.a. all need external HD's / PC's or alike right? That's absolutely not what I am looking for, I just want a single unit...

If you are after cheap and cheerful try a PS3 or an atom PC (easy for sub £300)

In all reality the majority of the non audiophile versions (ie slim, Sonos etc) are designed for the generation that don't use CDs and the computer literate( by that I mean Pcs are integrated in tv setups) so no ripping required.

And stay away from Olive - I had Olive 4 (not the newest HD version) for several days and I can only confirm the bad reviews. The display hung all the time, the iPhone software crashed almost each time, the cd drive was making strange noise putting a cd into it, the iRadio was very limited too. Shame, because overall the idea as a single box solution was very good, but hopefully they get the bugs fixed in the later versions. Until then, I'll stay with naim :-). And as additional bonus the Olive sound was not bad, but no match to the Qute's output.

Have you tried the VB with M2Tech - I don't think it will work as there are no drivers for Linux AFAIK - the Wavestream stuff will work fine.

Maybe I have found something... Does anybody know the Sony NAC-HD1E? That seems very promising!

Bas,

Alco suggested the Olive, it's still a mystery to me why he is suggesting this.. on a Naim forum. If you would have the chance to compare the Olive to the UnitiServe in your home the choice would be pretty simple.

The UnitiServe gives you a lot of the HDX technology except the analogue board and the touchscreen. I would prefer the web or app interface any way.

Looks like a discontinued product.
