The clock stops at one

Posted by: Laxton on 23 April 2001

Hello,

I've had the 82 for more than a year and up till now, i've not really tried listening to it at insane volumes. My volume pot has never had the need to make its way past 11 o'clock for comfortable(loud!) listening. Just today, i had some paperweight that suddenly made it's way onto the "up" button on the 82 remote. The knob turned clockwise(before i could stop it) and stopped at 1 o'clock. Puzzled, i tried lowering the volume via remote after i remedied the paperweight situation and tried maxing the volume with the remote again. Surprisingly, the volume knob just wouldn't make it past one. I can turn the knob manually to maximum without any problems. I could even lower the volume from maximum down to zero. But going clockwise seems to be a problem. I've even tried remotely and manually turning up and down the volume knob hoping that it's just a mechanical/lubrication fault, but to no avail. Is there something wrong with my 82? Does anyone face a similar problem with any other naim remote preamps?

Regards
Laxton

My habits are similar to yours, I play the CD at 8.00pm and the TT at 11.00pm.

This can cause the volume and balance knobs to stick through lack of use.

There is a very easy remedy.

Put the mute mode on and manually twist the knobs full orientaion both ways about 20 times. That will loosen them up.

Your remote will then be able to cope.

Never had that problem with my 82 and I rarely have it past 9PM.

Hi,

Thanks for your replies.

I've tried turning the knob manually for 20-30 times but it's still stuck at one.

Is there a way to remove the knobs? I've always thought that it involves ripping the whole preamp apart?

Congrats on buying the Hi-Cap. Have you got it yet? let me know how it sounds. I was selfishly hoping you would not buy it so I could!! But seriously, I am glad you did. Trouble is, it would probably lead you to thinking about another Hi-cap for you 82. Let me know if you want to try it out. I can always lend you mine.

Shahreza,

I wouldn't be needing the extra volume unless i've gone deaf from years of loud music or insane! smile But i guess that i want to listen with a peace of mind thinking that everything is okay. Since it's not a very big problem, i'm not really to bothered by it. It'll be ideal if there's a quick remedy to it.

Sherman,

Well, according to Vik, it should be cooking from next month onwards. Thanks for the 82 offer. I'll drop you a mail on the improvements as soon as it's up and running. BTW, did Vik buy you coffee? smile

Laxton,

Yes, he did and it was good. Although I have to say that the only thing I remember is the fully active'd NAIM 500X3. Had heart palpitations till the end of Sunday. Buy more Toto and dream...

Dave,

That'll qualify as the "Most Hyperbolic Reverse Upgrade" snappy. Maybe i could throw in a few tabs of Viagra to help solve the problem for you too? smile:);) Sure works for most. wink

Dave,

"stuck at 1 must be painful"

It sure is! But it was good while it lasted... wink smile

I wouldn't mind giving away my 82 though if someone threw a 52 in my direction. cool

Congratulations on the promotion.
