What is your favorite Rock / Metal track and from which Album?
Posted on: 01 October 2008 by droodzilla
OK, I'll go with:
Radiohead - The Bends (contemporary rock)
Boston - More than a Feelin' (classic soft rock)
AC/DC - Whole Lotta Rosie (classic metal)
A good question that had me mentally revisiting my headbanging youth.

Deep Purple - The Shield (The Book Of Taliesyn)
Atomic Rooster - Vug (Death Walks Behind You)
Cathedral - Captain Clegg (Caravan Beyond Redemption)
Motorhead - Ace of Spades (Ace of Spades)
Iron Maiden - Run to the Hills (Ed Hunter)
Amon Duul II - Syntelman's March of the Roaring Seventies (Tanz Der Lemminge)
There are a whole lot more of course - Uriah Heep are an excellent band - in my very 'eavy, very 'umble opinion.

Tool - 'Parabol/Parobola', from 'Lateralus' (prog metal)
Nine Inch Nails - 'Big Man with a Gun' from 'The Downward Spiral' (industrial metal)
A lot of what I might have called metal thirty years ago, would probably not count now, Thin Lizzy, Led Zeppelin, Rush.
Does anyone remember the 'A2Z of Heavy Metal' in the 'Record Mirror' around 1980?

Who were the first to do HM?
My guess is You've really got me by The Kinks was the first of the genre.
Vincent Crane always claimed that Atomic Rooster were a soul group and when soul progressed to its ultimate goal the groups would sound more like Atomic Rooster. I know Vince had mental health problems and often said strange things, but his Atomic Rooster sure made some very fine records.

Common consensus seems to point this way,it certainly stood out like a sticky out thing when released.

I like all of Led Zep 1V, does that count ? Or does perceived, quality negate relative "metalness" ?

Anybody who thinks “all of Led Zep 1V” is a track, obviously suffers from poor perception.

In heavy metal music, poorly conceived is half composed.

Da da da daa. Da da da daa.
Or Should that be Da da da daa.

I have always considered Beethoven 5th to be the start of heavy metal too.
I also seem to remember reading that people were so incensed by the use of rhythm over melody that they walked out of the first performance. I am sure others here would know much more on the subject than me.

Maiden are my favourite metal band,
Appetite for destruction may be one of the finest and most METAL albums....
But the most HM track I can think of is Motorhead's Ace of Spades.

Led Zeppelin were the first proper metal band, and Whole Lotta Love is the seminal and best metal track. Before them it was "Underground" music which opens up the whole new vista of your favourite Underground track.
Beethoven has no more to do with it than a caveman beating a hollow log with a stick.
yeah, yeah "Tube Staion at Midnight" etc.

The first reference to Heavy Metal is often said to be in Steppenwolf's Born to be Wild.
I like smoke and lightning
Heavy metal thunder
Racin' with the wind
And the feelin' that I'm under
Yeah Darlin' go make it happen
Take the world in a love embrace
Fire all of your guns at once
And explode into space
But I'm happy to go along with Ludi Van Beethoven - though I do think he ripped off ELO for the intro to his big hit single - Please click here.
I guess too much HM can make you go deaf though.

I just fired out an oldie album.
Slade - Slayed? on vinyl.
Might not be heavy metal, but man can this lot rock.
If only Noddy Holder was the lead singer in AC/DC.
Brought back some fond memories as a youth though

The day after I got my O'level results in 1981, I went to Castle Donnington - Monsters of Rock (2nd one I think). AC/DC headlined, but Slade stole the day, they were superb and rocked just as much (more) than anyone else on the line-up that day.
To have been part of 70,000 headbangers singing 'So this is merry Christmas' in drizzle on the 21st August is a cherished memory.

I've just got hold of Uriah Heep's new album - Wake the sleeper.
Best album they have done in years in my view.
I found, i put it on 1st time and to me, so so...
Second time round - better.
Third time round - it's taken most played CD rock spot.
These guys are still going strong!

...Rising by Rainbow
It ab-so-lutely belts along ...they never did anything as good before or after.
...only 6 tracks and apparently most were done "live" in just about one take
"A light in the black" features just about the best drum sound this side of Bonzo! (courtesy of Cozy Powell)
