62/Hi-Cap2/250
Posted by: BLT on 24 December 2002
I've just been offered the combination above for £950. The 250 has just recently been serviced. Is this a good deal?
I wasn't planning on an amp upgrade, but if the price is good then I will take advantage of the situation.

Hi
You would expect to pay that ammount for a serviced 250 alone so this looks like an absolute bargain mate.

Jim

Well I don't think it's a bargain at all, so you shouldn't buy it. And it's such an awful offer that you should give me the buyers contact details so I can discuss it with them...
£950 for a 62/Hi-Cap/250 is a no-brainer. Even if you don't want them you could sell the individually on Ebay and make a profit. I think you'd get £200 for the 62, £300-350 for the Hi-Cap and at least £800 for the 250 giving a profit of about £350/£400!

The 250 probably has a "bolt-together" case, in which case it's quite old and the price is probably about right. The 62 and HiCap (I assume your "2" is a typo!) may also require servicing at some point to suit you (about 200-ish quid for both?)
If the 250's newer (sleeve case) and/or the 62/HiCap are recently serviced too, then that sounds pretty good to me. Don't forget the SNAICs -- if they're grey you'll want to replace them (about 50 quid each for new).
Best;

Well, thanks for the advice, I spoke to my wife and we have put down a deposit. I thought that the price was pretty good (it includes a 6-month warranty), but I always like a quick sanity check.I 'll try the 62 vs my 32.5 and keep whichever one I prefer. I think that I'll flog the spare pre-amp and my 140 on E-Bay - the sale prices for NAIM gear look pretty good there.
Looking forward to a musical holiday.

This may be the perfect scenario for me... I have the somewhat opposite (see my 32_5 vs. 62 and other assorted questions post elsewhere) situation. I have a 62 (and 140 & SNAPS) now and have the opportunity to buy a Hi-cap and a recently re-capped 32_5 as a package. I'll be interested in how youR 32_5 vs. 62 comparison goes. Keep us all posted!

The hicap/250 alone makes it worth buying and the 62 is ideal as a partner.
In time you have the option to go to 82. As good as the 72, 102 maybe, skip them and go to the 82.

Well, I've finally got round to comparing the 62 to the 32-5. The reason for the delay is that from the minute that I fitted the Hi-Cap to my 32-5, and replaced my 140 with the 250, I have just been listening to record after record. The fact that my wife bought me the polymer bases for my Ninkas also contributed to my enthusiasm for delving into my record collection.
The 250 is of the extruded case type, rather than bolt together, by the way.
Anyway, as regards the comparison - I think that I prefer the 32-5. It's difficult to tell for sure, as I have to wait for each pre-amp to warm up before any meaningful listening can take place and this precludes any instant A vs B comparisons. Also, it's difficult to tell if my comparison is of a 32-5 vs 62 per se, as both amps are pretty old and I don't know if either have ever been re-capped at any stage. However, I am aware that I feel more relaxed and enjoy the music more on my 32-5, compared to the 62. I'll do some more listening and get back with my conclusions.

Seems like there's something going around: Advert on loot
There's another 62/hicap/250 for 1100 on there too.

Hi BLT,
You can check the history of the amps with Naim. Phone the office in Salisbury, give them the serial numbers and they will be able to tell you if they've been serviced, what they did and when.
As everyone says it's well worth having them serviced and not something that should be overlooked too long as capacitors can 'leak'.
Cheers
Dave

You are getting an extremely good price. Perhaps too good.
Check everything is as it should be and if it is buy it?
The 62 is not the best pre-amp Naim have produced but the hi-cap and 250 are worth the asking price alone.
Swap the 62 for an 82 at sometime in the future and you will have a very fine amplifier indeed.

Well, I've done my final listening and can confirm that I definitely prefer the 32-5 to the 62. Thanks for all the comments above, I guess that an 82 is the way to go, but first I have to get a Hi-Cap for my CD5, and then get my Sondek serviced, and then replace the cartridge, and then change the grey SNAIC's to black, and then replace my Stands Unique support with QS/Hutter/Fraim, and then get my Hi-Cap re-capped......
