135 or 250?

Posted by: Jean-Marc on 31 August 2003

Hi,
a person I know has a pair of 135s he wants to swap for my 250, plus cash.
Money wise the deal would be OK for both parties.

My system is CDS2/52/250/Fraim feeding Kef LS3.5A
TT is Thorens 124/Aro/Dyna DV20x

Deal would be my 250 (150xxx, 1999) plus 1300 euros for the 135s (125xxx, 1996), sold 3000 euros.

The guy kindly propose me to come over for a demo of the 135s in my system, but I don't want to have him to travel for nothing.

Would it be worthwhile for me to shell out the difference? What am I likely to gain?

Thanks
Jean-Marc

Yes. You gain more control of the speakers at high volume since the 135s have more transient power and they have active cooling (fan).

Tuan, Mark,
thanks for the anwers. So, I think I will call back the guy to arrange for a demo.

I'm also considering changing from a 250 to 135s or 300 to drive my Shahinian arcs. I sit very close to my electronics what is the fan noise like on the 135s?

The fans only starts up when you play loud.

Even when they reach full speed, they drown as soon you have signal through the speakers (music).

Jean-Marc,

Did you see my thread below (source fist but oh those 135's)? In it I basically rave up the 135's. And I've owned both chrome bumper and olive 250s. The 135's are on a whole 'nother level.

Hi Markus,
yes, and I can't find a more enthusiastic review of the 135s!
I will give it a go, even if I hadn't planned the 1300 Euros budget right now, but life's too short, as one says Eek

Back to an old thread,

Thanks to everyone for the advices (and Richard D. for the patience!). I have purchased the pair of 135s this afternoon Big Grin

So far: big improvement over the 250, one of the VFM upgrade so far (spent "only" 1300 euros and p/x the 250).
it's amazing the amount of details coming through, and my LS3/5s seems to love the juice a lot!

Cheers
Jean-Marc
