Haydn's choral works

Posted by: Rubio on 06 December 2006

I'm delving into the choral repertoire at the moment, and I thought about getting to know some of Haydn's work. I already have "The Creation" with Rattle and "Paukenmesse" with Pinnock, and I wonder if you have recommendations for any more CD's? What about Te Deum? I have read something about a recording with the Vienna Boys Choir (RCA). Is this it?

Any other recommendations for excellent choral CD's will also be appreciated. I have already read the older choral threads on this forum.

I would add the "Nelson" and the "Maria Theresa" Masses to you list. The recordings I have disappoint, but I am sure that others will recommend versions of these choral pieces.

Dear Rubio,

I am sure you will find the Te Deum, short though it is, very rewarding, and I can vouch that the recording you put a link to is lovely.

As for the other big Masses, I have almost the whole lot with George Guest leading, on Decca, in fine readings from the 60s and 70s. These will be at budget prices now and are very fine in every way.

Among more recent recordings look out for those from Richard Hickox. He has a real feeling for this music, as I can relate from having attended several of his performances in the Three Choirs Festival over the years. I believe he has recorded for Chandos and Virgin Veritas, though that may be wrong.

I cannot easily send you to just one of these Masses, as I love them all. The Nelson Mass might be a good starting point, but it is probably sensible to absorb them one at a time and then move onto the next...

All the best from Fredrik

I agree with Fredrik that the masses are all good. The Nelson is a very good one to start with; after that I suggest the Harmonie Messe, my favourite by a short head, and the Guest version is as good as any.
