n-vi and NAP200
Posted by: Tom H on 13 May 2010
Hello all...
I've read a few posts on this subject but still a little confused and looking for some guidance.
I'm looking to upgrade my n-vi by adding a NAP200 (or possibly NAP250). The n-vi user manual shows the analogue output from the n-vi going to a preamp before going to the power amp. But as I understand it, the NAP200 can be run directly from the n-vi without a preamp...
So: Can the n-vi connect directly to the NAP200? And if so, how can the same output also supply a preamp?
Apologies if this is a stupid question!
Thanks,
Tom

Hi Tom,
no need for a pre-amp. The output on the n-Vi is a preamp output anyway, so all you need is the special lead and a power amp. You then go into the set-up menu and tell the n-Vi that you're running the Main front L+R channels with an external amp (EXT).
As for the pre-amp in the manual, I'll have to go check that. It might be referring to integrating the n-Vi into an existing 2 channel system. This can be done via the same socket linked into the AV input on the pre-amp, which will be set to Unity Gain. When in this mode, the volume control of the pre-amp is bypassed and the n-Vi takes over volume control of the entire system.

Many thanks Richard, much appreciated!
Now I just need to decide on 200 or 250...

Tom, I did this very demo at my dealers a few months ago, and thought that the 250.2 won hands down. So I bought one.
Welcome to the Forum, and try not to spend too much more than you intended!

Specially built ESLs, but I haven't actually got this (second) system up and running yet, sadly.

Have you tried plugging in the n-Vi to the Quad system though Graham ? - A stacked Quad, 5.1 system has got to be a bit of fun...!!

Steve, the main system is three floors away at the top of the house, compared to my living room on the ground floor where the nVi will live, and I could not physically get the additional speakers into the music room to try out a 5.1 system up there. That said, I must get the living room system fired up. Unfortunately, the electronics genius who's helping me wire up the house has been seriously ill for months now. Very sad for him, frustrating for me.

I see what you mean, Graham, and I can understand why the NAP250 sounded better than the NAP200.
The reason why I wondered your use of speaker was because Tom H wasn't sure to go for the 200 or the 250.2 with the nVi. I was wondering whether the 250.2 would be as far ahead with the nSAT speakers???
Otherwise I'd predict it is an expense that could be directed elsewhere???

Jon

Thanks for the advice gents!
I had to go for the 200 in the end, for financial reasons. But saving up for the next upgrade....
I can see this Naim addiction being a long and ruinously expensive hobby.....

Hi Tom,
What is the difference like on the nVi now you've added a NAP200??
Do you use the nSYSTEM speakers as well??

Hello John,
I haven't actually got the NAP200 yet, the dealer had to order it in from the UK (I'm in Singapore), so I should get it in a few weeks. I'll report back once I've given it a listen!
For speakers I am using ProAc Studio 140's at the front, and some old Mission bookshelf speakers at the rear. I'm using the system much more for music listening than for movies now, hence the desire to upgrade the amp.
