Good news! I only used one once, but I knew that I would never buy another PC after that!
If there was a stock to buy into in the long term it must be MAC!

Just ask if you need anything.

Thanks gary. I really don't think I'd have taken the plunge without you guys to fall back on.
I'm in lust with almost everything about this machine. It even smells cool, like my 1970s chemistry set!

Congrats Tony - and welcome to the wonderful world of Apple Macs!

Andy, there are a number of functions mac performs in the wee hours of the morning, unless of course you have put it too sleep. These are scripts for daily, weekly and monthly. Which I believe includes various cleaning routines.
Basically download a programme called ONYX.
Are you having a specific issue. Its rarely to do with caches and the likes IME, them ideas tend to be bought over from Switchers

6 months down the road with an iMAC not a problem after 10 years in which I never got the PC to work properly. What is the real killer is that MS Office works better on the Mac than on Windows. What is really great is that our printer simply works whereas on the PC it quite often would not. I guess Safari is not perfect but hardly a big problem.

Well, you guys and the ex-girlfriend have convinced me to go and buy a brand new one! And as a piece of serendipity I've just received an email from the BA Executive Club informing me that purchases from the Apple store qualify for BA airmiles. Which is nice.
Quick question: Web pages only cover about 60% of the width of the screen. There's obviously no Windows expand button on the top right of the page.... where is the button in Safari?
Thanks
Tony

Bottom right of the window the shaded triangle point, click and drag.

Or click the green button on the top left corner of the browser

The green button only zooms to the actual content of browser. The simulate the Windows "Maximize" functionality, you need to create a simple bookmark and assign the following script to the bookmark as an http address:
javascript:self.moveTo(0,0);self.resizeTo(screen.availWidth,screen.availHeight);
Have fun with your mac.

Macs don't have a maximise option that fills the screen with a window. The little green plus button will make the window big enough to remove the scroll bars (if possible). I thought it weird at first and kept dragging the windows bigger than they needed to be, but I quickly became accustomed to it and now just about always leave the windows size decision to OSX.

I seem to have some evidence that refutes winky's declaration that "Mac's dont have the maximize option." I find that it is application dependent. When I click the green plus button on Firefox, Text Edit and, funny enough, the box on which I am writing this post, all of these immediately fill my whole screen. Safari, and a few others I tested do not respond this way, but rather how winky describes.

Thanks John, I just assumed it was the OS, rather than program dependent. I admit to not testing it extensively.
You really do get used to Mac-quirks, though. The lack of a right mouse button initially drove me nuts but the double-finger-and-click has become second nature to the extent that other laptops (including my work machine) now seem deficient.
The double-finger zoom and scroll on the touchpad (app dependent) is also genius.

Yeah I really hate not having a right click, and having to reach to the keyboard ctrl key. Do you have one of those mac mice that has a scrolling ball at the index finger and buttons on the side? I don't know the model but it is brilliant.
Oh hang on - you are working from a laptop no? Then never mind. But you could get a mouse for that. I think it is called a "super mouse" made by apple.

Tony the premis behind a mac is drag and drop, a full screen would work against this.

OK guys advise me. I am just not interested in computers at all - hence I love the plug and go functionality of the Mac and can't be bothered with downloading extra software. But is firefox better than Safari - will it do anything to upset this stability I have been waiting 10+ years for?

Nope, I use firefox all the time. Except when I want to download a youtube movie.
