My iMac... I can't believe this.

Exactly 15 minutes from opening the packaging and I'm posting on here. Oh boy!

I agree with Bas - Firefox is significantly better than Safari IME. It transforms the look of this and other forums too so that everything is much more readable. Well, at least it does on my iMac.

Yeah I really hate not having a right click, and having to reach to the keyboard ctrl key. Do you have one of those mac mice that has a scrolling ball at the index finger and buttons on the side? I don't know the model but it is brilliant.
Oh hang on - you are working from a laptop no? Then never mind. But you could get a mouse for that. I think it is called a "super mouse" made by apple.
Yeah, it's a laptop. I use a Logitech bluetooth mouse with two buttons when I'm sitting at the table or desk, but when it's on my lap (what, with it being a laptop and all...) I use the trackpad. I personally don't like the feel of the Apple-brand mice and don't really get on with the tiny trackball, but each to his own.

I have to use a Windoze PC at work and it takes longer than that for the bloody thing to start up each morning!
Tony, welcome to more productive, fun computing and a Windows Service Pack-free world.

Apple just calls them security updates or 10.5.x updates but they essentially serve the same purpose.

Excellent! What's the spec?
Posted on: 13 November 2008 by Tony Lockhart
Again just the basic model, 20", 2.4GHz, 250Gb HDD etc. I have simple needs and don't 'do gaming' so it'll be plenty for me. If need be 2x 2GB of Crucial DDR2 RAM is about £46 at the moment.
For the first time my photographs look stunning on a screen. I sometimes find it hard to believe that I took them!

I also have the base model. If sufficient is not enough then nothing will be.

I'm in lust with almost everything about this machine. It even smells cool, like my 1970s chemistry set!

I'm addicted to the smell of new mac products - I am getting help for it

We could form a support group. Play music from the Mac to a squeezebox or something in a darkened room with packaging scattered about the place!

I'm quickly coming to conclusion that I don't do technology or more like technology don't do me!!
I can never fully understand or find exactly what I need from manuals, it's like I'm the only one to have come across this set-up, this problem etc etc.
I have been told in the passed this is part of the fun, I'll buy that with a PC but it's supposed to be different with a MAC...... or is it?

Yep downloaded it - had a quick play over lunch (working at home today) - definite improvement.
Thanks Jon and others.

In addition to Firefox, there is Opera, which is a no frills browser that runs a little quicker than Firefox IME. Also there are certain sites with java applets that Firefox seems to choke on. I get intermittent no-response to clicks and have to restart the browser. Then I usually go to Safari as my default. But most often I am using Opera. Also does anyone know the relative robustness of security of Firefox and Safari (or Opera) I have heard that Safari is of the more secure, but I read that in a trade, so maybe not.

On the advice above, I tried Firefox. Generally an impressive browser and I would still be using it but.....but I had a problem with it that forced me back to Safari. When I clicked on search results in Google (not the sponsored ones - just regular results) the browser would divert to one of those shite shopping sites instead of, say, the manufacturer's site where I intended to go. The URL shown in the search result looked fine but the browser would divert to somewhere else.
Anybody else have this issue?

I use Firefox & haven't experienced what you have just described.
Occasionally Firefox hangs on me and I have to force quit and relaunch the programme. Pain as this can be, I am sticking with it as it works much quicker than Safari the majority of times.

Winkyincanada,
I think that the redirect derives from a cookie on your machine. It is not a function of the browser. Check your cookie directory for anything with the word 'redirect' as part of its title and remove it.
I say "I think..." because I am a PC man and am shy of extrapolating absolutely from the PC environment to the MAC environment.

Cheers, Fraser!
I went to the cookie section and searched for cookies that included the name of the site I had been re-directed to, deleted them and bingo!
Thanks.

After you all helped me make up my mind back in March 07 I finally just got my imac -refurbed 20" 1GB + 250GB and very good it is too. Just getting used to navigate around as different compared to pc, so far so good and impressive.
I am not too computer savvy but I have just managed to do a spread sheet using the free trial of numbers then exported to excel format and it worked on my pc. Very happy, and easy.
Could I ask what everyones doing regarding anti virus - if you use safari to surf does safari have anti virus protection?

I just connected my 5 year old printer with usb cable clicked add printer and it printed my document all in under a minute - WOW! It didn't even need any of the computer space clogging software crap that comes with the printer to be installed that just sits on your desktop and cuts in on everything, I mean I was prepared with the old instruction manual and driver disks thinking I will up all night trying to install this old printer and I didn't even need it - double WOW! I installed and printed under a minute WOOHOOOO!
Posted on: 19 November 2008 by garyi
Haha yes it can be easy. Although to be fair the tonnes of software crap for printers does reside in your system library>printers for all majour makes and models, so people like you can I can simply plug in and get on with it.
Regarding viruses, there are no know viruses for mac. However the latest update to safari does including anti phishing filters. so should be downloaded.

For all new mac users if you are looking for the secure padlock icon it isn't in the search window box right corner as in windows but a tiny little padlock in the right corner of the actual page window. It took me ages to figure out why I can't get secure logins for buying tickets etc, DUH!
Also I have been searching to see if there are any programmes to make ichat and pc talk together for audio video chat, quite important as I maybe emigrating and it will help us stay connected with all my pc family, seems that there isn't and I have been looking at skype for mac. I cannot find if it is compatible with ichat or is its own app and whether it can use my built in camera and mic, any experience with skype?

ichat uses the AIM network. PC users need the AIM software and an account.
The lock icon in the top right of a safari window is simply telling you that the page you are on is secure if you click it, it will tell you details of the security certificate, it serves no function in terms of secure login.
