Pre-amp - Naim or ATC

Was looking at adding a Hicap to my 102/180 setup when my local Naim dealer suggested using an ATC pre with a modified cable instead as to his experienced ears this combo sounds rather good (and cheaper) - any else heard of this?

Had been thinking about that route - I feel some serious demoing coming on!
