FAVORITE 'TRANE
Posted by: Markus on 21 January 2002
Just thought it would be fun to have a thread where we could post our most-cherished John Coltrane tunes. The "Jazz: The New Dance Music" thread got me feeling warm and pleasant feelings about Coltrane and motivated to revisit some of my favorites.
Here then, to kick things off, are some of my favorites:
From the "Gentle Side of John Coltrane" album, Wise One and Lush Life
Exotica
Looking forward to your postings...

I think the whole 'Lush Life' album is fantastic and I strongly urge you to hear the album he did with Johnny Hartman. My favourite coltrane album is probably 'Love Supreme', it took me an age to get into but I find it so rewarding.

Some years ago, 1996, I was given a tape which had 'Miles and John Live in Stockholmm 1960' written on the side. 'Trane was wonderful, truly amazing, managed to make the sax sound like was alive and he was squeezing it, hard, to make it scream. I've tried to buy a CD of it but can't locate one. Can any one help? Other than that it's Love Supreme for me.

Definately one of the best. I've heard it said that on this album the real star is the producer, who had the good sense to bring the two artists together, get out of the way and let them make music. One of my favorites and thanks for mentioning it.

I never thought I'd ever want to listen to that tune, I never thought I'd ever want to see Julie Andrews with her clothes off, but that's another thread.
I also really like 'Crescent', which I found took me longer to appreciate than the later 'A Love Supreme'. In retrospect I think that 'Crescent' is easier than 'A Love Supreme' but I was primed for ALS by the Santana/Mclaughlin version, which is a tune I love to play loud.
I must be lucky, my wife told me I could never play enough Coltrane, but she still doesn't like Frank Zappa

I think the standout track on the trane/hartman record is lush life. No matter how many times I hear it it still moves me. I believe this is a Billy Strayhorn composition (as an aside I strongly urge you all to by 'and his mother called him Bill', this is a tribute to the great man from the greatest man of all Duke Ellington! The Johnny Hodges solos on this record will make you weep they are so moving). Blue Trane is also a fantastic record, I love the opening track when Trane just goes on one and it sounds like all the band are trying to cut in.

I have yet to hear any John Coltrane I do not like. I have the Mobile Fidelity Giant Steps and just love it. Here's one case where an audiophile disc is worth the money. A Love Supreme, Blue Train, and Thelonius Monk and John Coltrane round out my Coltrane discs and I would be hard pressed to select a favorite. I hear other pieces on the local jazz station here and there and those are rather fine, too.

Hi
I've just received Love Supreme [played live in Antibes 1965] from Amazon at a budget price of £4.99. Wonderful. Amazing. The best bargain ever. Ever. I'm still stunned.

Elvin Jones and Jimmy Garrison ROCK! Along with Mc Coy this is the greatest rhythmn section ever. Ive recently bought a load of Elvin Jones Bluenote lps, the trios with Joe Farrell are stupendous. The Ultimate Elvin is superb.

Stephenjohn, yes classic quartet Coltrane/Tyner/Garrison/Jones
Jimmy Garrison was utterly stupendous, with a huge resonant sound. I think Coltrane really needed that kind of rock solid foundation to anchor the music and allow him to play the way he did. Garrison taught William Parker currently the worlds greatest bass player.
I highly recommend his Painters Spring (Thirsty Ear)if anyone is interested in living musicians Mind you I've been recommending it for a year and noone has listened yet.Its in all the shops.

Still pumped after seeing Joe Lovano trio last night. Idris Mohammed just blew the house down with his drumming.
