Positioning of CDP and amps?

Hi there,
Looking at some of your set ups (pics) I realised that you often place your electronics between the loudspeakers. Why do some of you do that (room not big enough or sonical advandages)? I've heard that this should be avoided if possible. What do you think?

Ilan (Naim distributor here) demonstrated to me that if the system is between the speakers, it affects badly the sound' especially at the lows.
