"Night and Day" - New Lingo
Posted by: pm on 07 June 2002
The difference between the old and new Lingo is "Night and Day" according to Simon Pope of Hi Fi World.
SMT and resultant short signal paths accounting for the differences it seems.
Anybody else had the privilege of hearing the new Lingo? ............. and do they agree?
Wonder if the dealers are giving a healthy part ex figure...........

I heard the new Lingo at a dealer last week. I had never done a serious demo of the Lingo before. So, i can't compare old to new. But, I am told that just because it has the bigger case does not mean it is the latest spec. Apparently originally Linn put the same Lingo in a new case. Then, about 3 months ago they made changes to the inside as well. This is what I heard.
Anyway (and I say this without a shred of hyperbole), the new Lingo versus Valhalla demo was the MOST compelling demo I had ever heard. The differences, in my view, were absolutely fundamental. Whats more, they were the sorts of changes that I did not experience when I went from the Ittock to the Ekos or ARO. The demo convinced me that the Lingo should come before the tonearm or cartridge. I won't say more. But, I am saving my $$$$ for it now.

Justin,
What you say about the case change seems to be true.
Pope described the difference between the old and new Lingo the same as between the Valhalla and old Lingo......
Bold words indeed....

I guess Dingo is obscure worldplay on "that'll be the dog" which was morphed into "that'll be the daewoo" in a Daewoo advert where the dog barks when the phone is ringing. Blue Heeler, in fact - but morph it all a little further and Dingo will do for me.![cool](/infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif)
Or, Dog's bollocks Lingo will work more effectively.

Just had a quick look at the Linn web site (www.linn.co.uk) and under Press Reviews Ivor has extracts from recent reviews of the 'new' Lingo.
1. Image HiFi (Germany), March 2002
There is a download of the article... but it is in German... would be interested in the translation into English.
and
2. Image Hifi, 2/2002, February 2002:
"....You didn’t believe that after 10 years Linn would not come up with some worthwhile improvements, did you? But the new Lingo is so much more than the sum of its parts. It scores heavily where the legendary Scottish turntable has aleady been miles ahead of its competition – sense of rhythm, flexibility and natural musical flow. At the end of the day there’s only one sensible recommendation for LP-12 owners: Buy it!...“
And so says the article

Hi Fi World has the 'new' Lingo (Lingo 3) at £850; the previous one (Lingo 2) was £750.
Justin, since you mentioned the Aro, what I would like to know is how the latest Lingo compares to the Armageddon!!

I couldn't tell you how they compare. I didn't do the demo. The problem is that going from Lingo to Geddon requires a motor change.
Having two identical LP12 (with differant PSU's) is no solution either, because I believe set-up variation plays a large role.
Anyway, I just don't know how they compare.

Given the relativley minor changes I cannot see it being that different, it is not directly in the signal path? In the same issue of the mag they also printed an apollogy to linn for an error the previous month. Was the review part of the compensation package?

I've always found it astounding that the difference in a motor PSU, not in the signal path, is so great. I can therefore easily believe that it's possible to do 'better'.
I suspect though that the improvements come primarily from other technology improvements, rather than SM, although that may be a factor.
All supposition though, I've not been inside one.
