Rear n-SATS - heights ?

Posted by: SC on 23 February 2010

Hi guys,

Just wondering, those of you using n-SATS as rears/surrounds, what heights do you have them set at...?

Dolby & DTS info seems to simply suggest 'a height' above ear level but no real guidance to 'how much' above....

In my last place I previously had non Naim (B&W)satellites mounted towards the ceiling and understand this is the general guide but I was just wondering what anyone has found with the n-SATS ?....I have a spare set of n-STANDS so I do have the option of them going on the floor like the fronts but this does seem to be rather low for rear channels..?

I 'think' I'd prefer them on the wall...but just need to decide soon and what the height is to be as I need to sort the cable chasing in the wall (the ever lasting house refurb continues..!)....

Thanks for any thoughts...!

Steve

p.s. Tony, how do you have yours..?!!

As you have the stands, and that is how they sound best, why not just use the stands? It would avoid the need to chase the walls, which has got to be good. The only time I have heard sats in 5.1, the rears were on the stands, and it was very good.

Cheers guys:

Nigel - I'm not too worried about chasing walls - compared to the total gutting I have been up to my neck in the last 5 months it's no sweat..! And at the end of the day, it will look sharper and all the better for the room.....I agree the Sats sound best on the stands, but considering it's rear channel use and in light of the fact the codec (Dolby & DTS) guidance is for some height I'm tempted to lean that way.....I have the dedicated wall brackets also - of which Naim must have intended use for - the performance cannot be too far different from the stands...?

Stu - it's all a bit approx at the mo as sofa is yet to be in place (in fact, it's yet to be purchased !) but I reckon my ears are gonna be around 1.5m up from the floor or so...? As for the back wall, it's basically going to be the rear of the sofa, perhaps a fraction out, but I really don't have much to play with.......I know if I get them on the walls I could get them slightly behind my ears, angled forward, which is beneficial for surrounds...with the stands I guess it will be more like a perpendicular line...

Did anyone get to experience or see the previous Naim dem room with surround SATS...? Just wondered how they had once had it....I did see some brackets up on the wall of the demo room during the BBQ event, but figured they were from before the refurb....?

Best, Steve.

Hi Steve,

I've got my four surrounds (for 7.1) mounted about 5' up (to bottom) on n-Sat wall brackets which are then mounted on wooden wedges to point them downward.

I'll post a photo later on. Works for me!

Many thanks Stu & Tony... Smile

That's kind of what I was figuring, so will follow suit.....I was planning on a mounting wedge for a bit of toe-in, but had ruled out them tilting downwards as I presumed this wouldn't be possible with the (limitations of) the Naim bracket and the way they hang on the pins....?

A snap would be great Tony, thanks...!

Steve.

Stu - will email you in reply about the other thing when I get a chance, I'm just grabbing net time here and there just now...!

Cheers Tony ! Looks great.

You have them pretty much up to the ceiling then....You have ceilings even lower than me it seems...!

Thanks again, S.

Thanks Max - the only problem with it is the complete absence of anything square and level...
