Play Station 2

I'm looking to get a PS2 for young master Sloop on ebay.
What should I be looking out for?
8MB memory cards are mentioned in relation to PS; is this big or tiny?
I realise there will be a PS3 out in Europe next spring si it's possibly not the best time to look for a s/h one, however needs must.
Thanks

Things you must know:
PS3 is a way off yet and is being put back all the time. It'll cost a packet too, so don't think the PS2 is dead yet, it isn't. Be prepared for mini-Sloop to be mesmerised by it and you having to set ground rules for the amount of time spent on it before you hand it over. My daughter is addicted to Burnout 2 and the new release, and she's only 8.
The standard 8 meg card is okay for lots of saves, but don't go spending £20 for one at HMV when you'll get a new one cheaper off Ebay - the third-party makes are perfectly fine.
The PS2 have been through many, many versions and the weakness is in the laser set. Prices used are still unreasonably high and as early ones are unreliable, it isn't a great idea to get a used one when there is a competetive market for new. The mini sized ones are okay. If I was you, I'd get a brand new PS2, but make the money back by buying a memory card from Ebay and getting your games used from Amazon or Ebay. There is a huge market for used games and you'll get great games for not much money. I have a buddy who's been through about 3 PS2's and the older ones will fail on you. I really wouldn't buy used.

2nd hand games are ok but i agree with Rasher buy a new PS2, safer and pretty cheap these days. Great value home entertainement for all the family. The eye toy games are great fun too for kids (and adults )
Burnout series is great. for us oldies (speaking for the over 40's without mandate) Grand Turismo 4 is cool too.

Customer to salesperson, "Can i have a wii please"
Salesperson, "Yes, the toilets are down the corridor and to your left"
It'll never sell...

Ignoring the urge to urinate I went for a new PS2.
Any advice regards games for a 10 year old boy (and 12 and 8 year old girls for that matter)
anything even vaguely educational?
and any to avoid.
Thanks

In my experience you just can't tell. I never expected my 8 year old daughter to love Burnout, but she also likes Toy Story. You never can tell, so it's best to ask them what they want.
Educational? Forget it!

I had ICO for my PS2 a while back. You play a little boy (with horns!) who is looking after a princess. You make sure she's safe and have to prevent her from wandering off as you battle dark shapes etc. You run along holding hands with her and call her if she gets too far away. Potentially a good game for youngsters to teach them some responsibility? Ok, it's a long shot, but better than shooting the crap out of someone!

This is one of the best games ever:

My son plays "Lego Star Wars" a lot, ditto a cartooney car chase shoot 'em up called "Cell Damage". The snowboarding games "SSX" and varients are good, but the graphics tend to make one a bit boggle eyed (A good reason to impose a 20-30 minute limit). "Eye Toy" (With motion sensing camera...) is fun, but make sure you have no fragile orniaments, pictures, hi-fi in the same room. "Sing Star" (Kareoke - comes with two microphones, you get points based on how well you follow the tune) is apparently a real show stopper at birthday parties... Places like GAME will have lots of second hand games for half the price or less of new ones, so unless you want the latest releases, probably the way to go.

Do they make a version of Bust a move 2 for the PS2? If not, get it for the PSX - it's one of the most addictive games on earth

PS2 is compatible with PSX games, so no worries there. Don't forget it plays DVD movies too!
