Beauty Vs Ugly: The Instrumentals quote:
Press Release
Think of it as one of those do-it-yourself spin-off combat kits. You’ve heard 2000’s Infesticons album, "Gun Hill Road," you’ve lapped up this year’s "Beauty Party" by the Majesticons, now you can recreate the epic battle bettwen beauty and ugly on your own dancefloor or even in your own home. Drop a ".. Theme" and watch the crowd fold their arms and get real, switch to a "…Party" and see the floor erupt in an orgy of catfights and champagne splurge. Hours of fun for all the family.
Alternatively, think of it as a sixteen track demonstration of just what a talented and varied producer MIKE LADD has become. From dirty psych rock to disco and back, the beats collected here show one man and his MPC stretching the form in whatever direction he chooses. Blam.
Damn! Ok, I stand by my assertion that Gun Hill Road is the dopest album Mike Ladd has done, but this is a hell of a slice of electro-funked up beats. Without the 'funny the first time...' vocals, the Majesticons beat those poor Infesticons down. Ouch! Check
Volvo Party. Seriously, for a tenner, this is a must buy (particularly if you found the original Majesticons release nauseating).

Mike, Seattle here. You're not funding record purchases and system upgrades with a grow op are you?

Weird, maybe it's just been put on the net, as there was a thread about it on his forum. Apparently it's on the 'still sick...urine trouble' CD. I'll check it out when I get home. Sage says:
quote:
to be quite honest, that whole freestyle was a long and uncomfortable moment for both of us. Listening to it afterwards, it sounded much better than it felt WHILE doing it. So I put it on the cd. I tried keeping the energy going...tried to keep it fun and light...
I think Apathy was rapping better than me on that...but he was trying to be a good rapper. I was trying to be a shit head. And we both succeeded.
I can rap like that forever. It's not hard. I don't think he could have rapped the way he was for very long, which kept me picking up slack. One eventually runs out of cool things to say. I don't ever have to worry about being cool.
In the end, I think it made Apathy look better the way we carried on. And I got to declare my love for Hanson

Mekon?
Mike, I was just kidding about the grow op.

I'm looking forward to picking up MF Doom's new one (as Viktor Vaughn) Tuesday at my local shop, after enjoying King Geedorah so much.
Has anyone heard it yet?
I've also ordered Dizzee Rascal from overseas ($17 vs $35) and look forward to hearing the entire album.

I've heard samples and they sound good. I can't find the LP though -- everyone seems to be out of stock already. Did you buy the LP Ludwig?
Eric

Eric, I haven't bought any version of Viktor Vaughn as my favorite shop won't have it until Tuesday. I plan to buy the CD, as I did w/ Dizzee. (I'm the only forum member who doesn't own a TT)

I've had a crafty d/l of a few of the V/V tracks (only to test out my iPAQ, I promise). Good stuff. Sadly, my hip hop wants list for next month is pretty full:
Vijay Iyer & Mike Ladd - In What Language?
Themselves - The No Music of Aiffs
Aesop Rock - Bazooka Tooth
Non-Prophets - Hope
Atmosphere - Seven's Travels
Buck 65 - Talkin' Honky Blues

Mekon,
A few things...
I didn't know Mike Ladd had a new project, so I might need to check that out. Non-Prophets too. But clearly MF Doom is the dopest.
Have you seen Sixtoo live? I thought you mentioned a show once. I have a chance to see him (w/ DJ Vadim, DJ First Rate, Yarah Brabo), so I might give it a go.
And finally... I'd like to pick up an MC Solaar album- is "Prose Combat" a good one?
Thanks.

Never seen Sixtoo live, I don't think he has played over here. I chat to Stigg of the Dump online now and then (who he works with; check Live at the Veglia Lounge and Villain Accelerate, both are awesome), and keep suggesting that the come over. I should imagine it will be good. Did you grab Antagonist Survival Kit? <Avid Merrion>I f*ckin' love it</Avid Merrion>. Of the rest of the guys on the line up, I only know Vadim. I've only got his debut, and the collab with APC, called The Isolationist. Generally I find his beats a bit straightforward, but I'd still check him out.
As for Solaar, I only have his stuff with Guru. The missus keeps threatening to pick up some more, as the whole lounging vibe is her thing (much more than mine).

Lounging Rap
What other lounging rap can you recommend, Mekon?
Posted on: 22 September 2003 by ErikL
I don't have any Sixtoo albums, but I remember you talking about him and thought a show might be fun.
RE: Solaar, this will be a "one and done" sort of purchase.
Did you ever pick up Jazzmatazz II and III (Streetsoul)? I like the jazzy sounds of I, but the randomness (reggae, R&B, etc) of II and straight-up MTVish neo-soul of III seem to fall short.
Posted on: 23 September 2003 by Mekon
Yeah, grabbed 2 and streetsoul. My missus still likes them (and that sort of thing generally), although lately she's been flitting between a load of Alain Toussaint produced stuff and few Charlie Mingus albums we have.
I reckon both Villain Accelerate by Maid of Gold (Sixtoo and Stigg) and Antagonist... should be on your buying list. Both take the sparse, pared down Sebutones sound to another level.

I received Viktor Vaughn last night, and have given it 4 listens. I'd say the sound is much more freestyley(tm) than King Geedorah. The lyrics are creative, a bit random, and its sometimes hard to follow any story line. But MF Doom is clever so it all works out perfectly.
Tonight I'm seeing Sixtoo and DJ Vadam.
In a few weeks- Cannibal Ox.

Well, last night's show was a bit of a letdown- Sixtoo never showed up. The first act was good, but I never got the name- some sort of laptop and upright bass and muted trumpet spazz jazz hiphop trio thing. DJ First Rate ate up DJ Vadim, despite pointing and refering to Vadim like he's a superhero (while Vadim stood stiff as a board, eyes bugged, like his organic chemistry thesis was just rejected).

Bummer.
BTW, did you pick up Maid of Gold: Villain Accelerate yet? To be honest, I was suprised when you said Sixtoo was touring as himself, in that I heard that he was going all out with Stigg to promote Maid of Gold.
