Unidentified CDs
Posted by: docmark on 23 March 2009
It seems that several discs, when ripped, come up as unknown. Is there a way of ripping these discs and then adding the album data after the rip? Can I batch several of them, or would I have input the data after each rip?

Generally, yes the album data can be added manually. How you do it will vary according to the software you are using.

Docmark,
I assume your referring to the HDX?
I have ripped about 450 CDs and have not had any that were unknown to either AMG or FreeDB.
I suggest you do the following:
Check A the AMG website first to see if the CD is listed there and if it contains album art (you'll see the cover picture), If it's there then it's an HDX problem with the software not accessing the database.
If the album is not on AMG, check FreeDb-- same story applies.
The other thing you can do is go to the DTC. Click the album to get it in the right side of the screen. Then "right click" and scroll to "check Db" This will force the system to search again for the data and update its findings. This has worked for me for cover art as I have not had your issue.
Naim is aware of the database access problem, if that turns out to be your issue. Of the 450 ripped albums-- all were found with AMG or FreeDb. 3 0r 4 were not found in AMG and only FreeDb (no cover art), and 2 or 3 albums found on AMG had no cover art. I have about 8 albums that were cataloged by the HDX as FreeDb when they existed on AMG and should have been recognized.
The other issue is one of adding cover art from the web if the Db doesn't provide any. You cannot do this yet.
If your albums turn out to not be located on either Db (unlikely, but possible), you can rip what you want and then do into the DTC and edit the tracks whenever you want.
Hope this helps

If you buy a new CD within a few days of release it can be 'unknown'. Requesting a database lookup a week or so later they usually have appeared on AMG and the details are updated.
Of my 400+ I have had a dozen or so not found on AMG but only 2 also failed on FeeDb. I also had two 'unrippable' but I made a copy on my PC then ripped that and it worked fine.

Thanks for the advice. It's interesting to note that most of the unknown CDs are from Channel Classics.

I do wish the HDX used Gracenote as a last resort. Although it has far less info, it's the biggest database.

CDDB is now Gracenote.
and has been for a while.

...unfortunately that causes insurmountable licensing issues if you want a product to be able to use both AMG and Gracenote.
Cheers

Rare??? Not really. I have hundreds of discs that are on neither site, albeit most are old punk, out of print or fairly obscure.
The most recent. "Diskaholics - Live in Tokyo" (Thurston Moore and Jim O'Rourke)
And "NYC Hardcore - The Way It Is"

A fair bit of this may also lie with the record labels themselves, who often submit incomplete or delayed listings to the metadata suppliers.

Remember that AMG do have a "Submissions" page for the public to be able to submit the details for any CDs that do not exist on their databases ...

I have several hundred disks with no metadata--including the Diskaholics. It should be in accuraterip, though
But my copy of The Way it Is came up. Or is that because you typed in the data?
Anyway, if you don't have disks without metadata, you must not be trying very hard. Get some pre-war reissues on Classics and Document and fly-by-night labels, or some of the Smithsonian Folkways cd-rs, or some obscure indie stuff, or some eccentric world music. C'mon--there is a whole universe out there, passing you by.
