HiCap Advice Please re: Stageline

Posted by: mfidelity on 08 December 2003

I have a HiCap on the way. The goal is power a Stageline. My system is 112/150/FC2/CD5. Currently I have the FC2 powering the 112/CD5. My objective is to get the best sound from my TT (LP12/Ittok/Cirkus).

My questions:

1. Should I power the Stageline directly with the HiCap?

2. Should I power the 112 with the HiCap and feed the stageline from the 112.

Thanks,
Dave

Hi
I disagree with ghunter, in that the hicap
improvement to the phono will probably be
of a geater magnitude, than it will to the
112. As you are aware, improving the source
will bring greater benefits...hence a better
stageline is more important than a better 112.
Finally, let your ears judge, keeping in mind
that if the hicap is old, new caps will make a
big difference, and if it is new, then it will
not sound its best until 400 hours or so of use.

I started out with a 112/150 combo and added a 2ndH HiCap. IMHO the improvement was significant. The 150 showed it's full capabilities in the form of stonger better controlled bass and a richer overall sound. At that time I ran my stageline off the 112 direct and it sounded pretty good.
Currently I am running the stageline off a HiCap into a 282/HiCap/250 ( before anybody comments I am not using 2 HiCaps into the 282 because of age differences between them) so I don't have a direct comparison but I have to say whilst the sound off TT does show an improvement it has not impressed me as much as the HiCap in the 112/150 combo did.
I have to say that again running the stageline from the 282 did not sound half bad BUT the significant improvement for me was in the 282 which was noticeably better when the duty of supplying power to the stageline was removed.
What this says is that best use of power supplies is complicated. As recommended you have do some serious listening comparisons. The other thing is to give each combo you try a bit of time to settle down. I noticed an improvement over a few days in the stageline sound after plugging on the HiCap. The full story is not revealed immediately.

I must agree with Geoff on this matter. Fitting the better power surply to the 112 is the way to go. The source first is from turntable only days when most of the cost was on the TT. Within a Naim system the most important item is the pre amp IMO Wink

Thanks for the feedback. It's going to be fun experimenting with the options.
