Daryl,

These are just about to hit the shops in the next few weeks:

Panasonic TH-37PX70PED
http://www.panasonic.co.uk/plasma-tv/th-37px60ped/index.htm

Should be able to pick one up for between 850 and 950. I've got one on pre-order at present.

I've got the earlier version of the Panasonic plasma which Roy refers to. It is an excellent picture with my n-Vi.

Well, Panasonic are the only folk making plasma at that size... all other alternatives will be LCD.

Personally though I'm delighted with my Sharp LC37XD1E, which also happens to be a futureproof 1080P full HD screen... if that matters to you.
It too is hooked up to an n-Vi and a V+ box... it's stunning.

Only thing is, as I heard recently, they're a bit thin on the ground - Sharp dramatically underestimated its' sales potential in the UK and there are queues building for this set.

I'd pick plasma over LCD any day. Much easier to look at...

That said, the Panasonic 37" plasma is the only thing I can recommend.

As I have pointed out many times, until you've seen the screen I chose working, you won't understand why.

6 months ago no LCD could compete with plasma at the same size... that was then this is now.

Have you seen the XD1 screen Edo?

Daryl, try and see it before you part with cash, and if you still prefer the plasma, buy the plasma. Winker

By the way - I happen to think the Pana gives a wonderful picture - certainly equal to my Sharp on many levels - but I have a well lit room and the reflective surface means I'd also get a great view of myself during daylight viewing - factor that and the fact the Sharp is Full HD and that's why I made the choice I did.

I'm not particularly getting involved in this argument.

However, I'd add just as how you would go and listen to a new Naim CDP, pre-amp etc. Go and view a new TV before you go to buy.

I'd initially thought I'd get one of the Sony Bravias, but upon watching it for half an hour next to the Panasonic, I realised that I couldn't sit and watch the Sony and simply loved the picture quality of the Panasonic.

My advice would be to go and watch them and then pick which one you want in your living room.

Don't think there's anything more for me to say on this topic either. Said it all before.

I recently went through the process of selecting a new flat screen and I spent quite a lot of time visiting (serious) stores to see, which screen was best for me. I saw recent Full HD screens by Sharp, Sony, Philips and Pioneer.

All of these screens performed fine when fed a Full HD signal. When fed 1080i, most were mediocre IMO, some were even bad. Only the Pioneer did a really good job de-interlacing and/or scaling sub-1080p material, but I thought it was too expensive (it was the PDP-5000EX).

There's definitely going to be a lot of 1080p material around within the next couple of months, but broadcasts are going to be 1080i or less.

With 576i, I thinks CRT looks best, then plasma, then LCD.

With 720p, I think plasma and LCD are more or less equal.

With 1080i, I think HD Ready and Full HD plasma look best (differences are small), then HD Ready LCD, then Full HD LCD.

With 1080p, I think Full HD plasma looks best, then Full HD LCD, then HD Ready plasma, then HD Ready LCD.

Given the realities of the material that's available and the price of the PDP-5000EX, I thought HD Ready plasma was best for me.

Cheers,

Edo

Hi,thanks for the replies.I will try and get a look at the screens mentioned, but as alot of you probably know it can be difficult to get a good demo in alot of the shops. What i need is a shortlist of screens so i can try and arrange a decent demo.I would like a hd ready screen for possible plans in the future.I sit 8feet away from the wall were i plan to mount this screen,do you think 37inch is suitable, as a 42inch was mentioned and i think this would be too big.Any more suggestions would be appreciated.Cheers Daryl.

I suspect HD Ready screens will be dead & defunct within 2-3 years and I would say Full HD would be the way to go if you want to plan for the future.

Since SKY-HD, HD-DVD and BlueRay are all 1080 (Sky 1080i & HD/BD-DVD 1080p) so it would make sence to go for a Full HD screen (1080 lines) and not settle for a HD Ready (Usually 720 lines or more) or HD compatible (less than 720 lines).

Again try to get a proper Full HD screen with a resolution of exactly 1,920 x 1,080 pixels to be fully future proof. Any other resolution screen will need extra scaling for HD material.
