CDSII(I) as a dead end!

Hi,
When considering to go for Naim's top flight player, I'm always a bit worried about the probability to come to a dead end. Spending another thousands of £ (SFr.) not knowing when everything comes to an end scares me a bit...
There's one question that I'm interested to know your opinion:
Naim certainly believes that CD technology will stay on the market at least for the next few years (otherwise they wouldn't have made a new top player). But what happens when CD once will be dead:
Is a CDS really a dead end? Wouldn't it be possible/does it make sense to upgrade a CDS II/III to another format? What are the differences
between CD and other (new) formats? Will there be a technical revolution necessary or is just a rather small jump....
What do you think?
