Turn off or not to turn off
Posted by: stevie d on 29 September 2003
Hi all
This weekend I am going to be away for the weekend (Friday - Sunday) as I am visiting sunny Scouseland to watch the Arsenal game the next day.
The missus is trying to make me turn my CD5/112/150 off this weekend as she is paranoid that it will catch fire. What exactly is the risk of something happening while we're away.
My main concern is that it is all fairly new and not been on constantly for the minimum 5 weeks (as per the manual) so I don't really want to cut the power.
Any comments will be gratefully received.
Stevie

hi,steve never turn your system off . this willnot harm it in any way. the naim gear is designed to work at its optimum when warmed up. just sit back and enjoy your music.

By all means ger her to turn it off - 'cos she'll have to put up with you moaning at her about the stereo underperforming for the next month or two and it will then be all her fault! LOL
Only joking,
but no, don't tun it off...

Is there a known instance of a Naim box spontaneously combusting?

If she's really that concerned about fire safety you should really be thinking in terms of not just switching everything in the house off, but also removing all the plugs from the wall-sockets, that way nothing can self-combust.

Leave Naim gear on,it makes music from heaven. Turn it off, it makes music from Sony. I only turn mine off if I'm going to be away for several weeks and I don't want the house-minder to touch the system.

Turn it off. Give your missus peace of mind and help save the Planet.
It'll soon warm up when you get back.

Not sure David. TV's should be switched off from standby, sure, but leave the plug in the wall so residual current can drain to earth - otherwise it CAN combust. (What I've been told anyway).

Actively enjoying it all
I think that I may be onto a winner here. If the fridge stays on why can't the Hi-fi?
Cheers

This is quite an exageration! This summer here in Sweden there was a period of nearly a week with frequent thunderstorms. I had my system off and unplugged during this time. Then, finally, the bad weather was gone and the system was fired up from cold.
It sounded marvelous!
BUT, leaving it on increases the life of the electrolytic capasitors in the power supply. This is a fact stated by a engineer at the Swedish Rifa factory.
I leave it on constantly (except for thunderstorming times) and have done so for more than ten years. Only misshapp is a fuse that once blow in the 180 when there was a power shortage.

If it is bothering your wife, then turn it off !
It's only a Hi-Fi, FFS.

I'm more in the "if it's bothering your wife, leave it on" camp.

More like a few days Fred. I never turn mine off if I can help it. Only time I do is when inserting a component that needs it ie Caps, Pre or Poweramp and when it's time for a good cleanup of the connections etc. I like to take my chances even in a thunderstorm( although most seem to take place when I'm out at work Etc. and coudln't disconnect anyway. From cold my sistem does'nt sound terrible (actually very good) but It just doesn't deliver to it's strengths for a few days and it seems that their are very, very slight improvements up to a week. Last time it was off was about 6 weeks ago when I had new windows fitted, and before switching back on after I got the living room back to normal, I cleaned all the plugs and sockets etc by inserting and removing half a dozen times so It will probably be on for another 6 or so weeks before I clean it again. Unless of course a new Supercap,Preamp or poweramp comes my way

Yep - a few days.
One compromise during thunderstorms is to just turn off the power amp (I guess tuner too, if you have one).

Leave it on along with the lecky blankeys, oven, snow maker, vibrators, open fire, the lot.
That way you wont be able to blame the hi-fi when your house burns down.

Good news.
The missus read this last night and has reluctantly agreed to let me keep it on. Bravo.

Which - the hifi or the vibrator??
Sorry - SOMEONE had to be childish so it might as well be me
My Rega Planet takes aaaaages to come on song after being turned off - the NAIT3 isn't so bad. And like others have said, my kit is on NOW while I'm at work - if there's a thunderstorm I guess I'm screwed...
Make your choice, adventurous Stranger;
Strike the bell and bide the danger
Or wonder, till it drives you mad,
What would have followed if you had.

Does that mean that if the vibrator was made by Carlsberg. It would probably be the best vibrator is the world?
