ESI Juli@ help (Win 7)

Posted by: pcstockton on 05 March 2010

Can anyone help me set-up an ESI-Juli@ with Widows 7? JS?

Should I be using WASAPI component in Foobar?

thanks in advance?

I am using wasapi with foobar, win7 and juli@
best choice in my opinion, though asio works just fine too.

Anything else you need?

No experience but from how 7 routes streams, I would think Occean is spot on. Smile

Thanks Ocean....

I have a couple of questions for you, if you would be so kind...

I cannot switch the setting off of "AUTO", and it is constantly lit up as "44.1". I can tell 24/96 is going through but not sure why the "44.1" isn't changing, and also why I cannot turn "AUTO" off.

Any thoughts?

This was all pre-wasapi. I am going to try Wasapi tonight.

BTW, auto sample rate switching is a must!!!! Thanks for turning me on to the Juli@.

Mine changes with each sample rate that goes through. If it is not changing from 44.1khz I am guess its not working....

If you go into windows sound manager you can test playback rates up to 192khz, maybe you haven't set these as playable rates in windows yet...just a thought.

Occean,

Thanks again for all of the help. And also to Naim for allowing these discussions.

Can you describe what I am changing "in windows" to allow 24/96?

Also, this was prior to wasapi or asio. Trying both tonight finally.

I have been busy or simply enjoying the M-Audio before it leaves. So i haven;t tested with either asio or wasapi yet. Perhaps this will change things?

thanks,

Control panel > Sound and Hardwear > Manage audio devices

Make sure the Juli@ is set to you default (for me spdif).

Right click and properties

Supported format tabs will give a list of sampling rates along with DD, DTS, you can test them all here and you should see the esi control panel change.

Also the advance tab will let you test all the rates at 24bit too. Also make sure exclusive mode is ticked for foobar.

Rememeber to set wasapi component as the output in foobar, a good test to see if it is working is to play another sound source and it should play (ie youtube) because has exclusive mode

I have got all this working in Win7 32 and 64bit. Also DTS & DD passthrough working with AC3filter 1.60b (but not the latest version) and gom player.

Awesome.... Thanks Occean.

Making progress... WASAPI is now passing throuh everything as needed. Confirmed by sending 24-96's to an old preamp with a 20bit DAC. It couldn't lock on.

I did notice that with WASAPI I can change Foobar output Bit rate. With ASIO this was greyed out.

What should I set it at? 24?

thanks again my friend,
Patrick

I read somewhere to set it to 24bit which is what I have done.

IIRC it has no detrimental effect on 16bit but it would on 24bit if set to 16bit.

If it will pass both 16 and 24 native, I would let it do just that but try and see what sounds best.

Thanks guys. I'll test some more tonight.

Currently using the analog outputs as it is a marked improvement over the Beresford, for what thats worth.

FYI, with Win& and WASAPI, 24/96 is sounding better than ever.

Good new Big Grin

Does your ESI control panel now switch between frequencies?
Posted on: 11 March 2010 by pcstockton
yes sir it does. thx
Keeping it on auto of course.

I will keep output at 24 bit in Foobar.

man this is a good card.

ANYONE looking for an internal (PCI) sound card for distributed audio should look into this. I think the hires is superior to the M-Audio. Tough to tell on redbook.

Although with auto sample rate switching it is a no-brainer.

Lastly, the DAC in this card is pretty good. I am guessing toslink into the Naim DAC will be fabulous.

Does the hiface do auto sample rate changing?

How about the popular Weiss product?

Does anyone know of others that are both worthwhile and also perform auto switching?

thanks!!!!!!!

Both does, at least on a Mac with Pure Vinyl and Amarra.

Ferenc, I've heard good things about Pure Vinyl. What's your view vs Amarra?

Pure Vinyl is a bit smoother, meatier, punches a bit more, generally very good. Amarra has more life, more PRAT and needs carefully chosen system. In the wrong system can be a bit thinner. I have both and like both.
