Nac12 Nap180 ?????
Posted by: Andreas Nystroem on 06 February 2004
Is there any reason a nac12 shouldn't work with a nap180. I can't get any sound out of it, just a loud hiss. The nac12 worked fine with my old nap160 and 140.

I had an old Naim 12 for a while and it was a really nice preamp. Problem was it looked a bit crap really.
I replaced it with a 62s, but always thought that something had gone missing.
In terms of the lack of music, I can't help though.

No, that's just the thing. I just bought it.
About a year or so ago i loaned the nac12 to another naim enthusiast and he couldn't get it to work either, but it worked fine with my 140.
The 180 lights up as it should and the nac12 also lights up, but no sound. If I disconnect the 12 and just power up the 180 the hiss is gone.

Hmm, if i fiddle around a bit with the volumecontrol or the interconnect I get a very very weak signal. I'm guessing (and hoping) it's the preamp that's faulty.

When using a 140 with a preamp, you use a blanking pin in the hicap connection.
Is it possible you need to use a blanking pin with the 180 as well?

My 12 was made way before any hicaps, it only has the standard 4 pin connection.
