I have just read that Oscar has died on BBC news and am so sad at the loss of one my all time musical heroes.

sad to hear that too. i well remember a series that he did on british tv with andre previn -- he alsways struck me as a friendly sort of person -- and quite humble, despite his obvious prowess at the piano.

the good thing is that he has left us good memories of him, in his music.

enjoy

It was the Oscar Peterson "Piano Party" on TV that first got me interested in jazz. Consequently the library entries under "P" number more than any other individual artist in both my vinyl and CD collection. I had the privilege to see him live only once at the Barbican, but it was a concert that moved me more than just about any other. A truly sad loss of a true great.

He was absolutely brilliant.

"We get Requests" is playing right now in tribute.

That's a great record. We also have the classic 'Night Train' and the box set 'Exclusively for my friends', both of which are excellent.

... not forgetting the 'meets Oscar Peterson' series, the one with Ben Webster meets is one of my favourite jazz albums.

I didn't know Oscar's music well, but my father has his Live at Montreux DVD. I have a video of his duet with Keith Emerson - a piano duel around Honky Tonk Train Blues - it's fantastic. So what I did know of Oscar is enough for me to realise we have lost a fine musician and a great entertainer. It is very sad news.

Live at the Opera House with Stan Getz is a stunner and it's conversion was one of the first CDs I heard that warranted buying a CD player !

I still choke up remembering the 2004 concert at the 25th Festival de Jazz de Montréal where he played with Oliver Jones... even though his left hand was already somewhere between earth and heaven.

Salut Oscar !

This was the only time Emerson said he was truly nervous. Like want to throw up nervous. Note the undercover Carl palmer on drums.

33 1/3,

Thanks for the link, which set me off looking up a few others. Excuse the picture quality and sound, and simply marvel at the artistry and virtuosity of the players. From 1969 the Trio (Oscar, Ray Brown and Ed Thigpen)play Triste

Regards

What is it with Christmas? Last year James Brown and this, Oscar.
I was fortunate enough to see him in 2006 at the RAH. Thank goodness we can still enjoy his music - his playing lives on!

I used to watch the Oscar Peterson Piano Party with my Dad - it was when our musical tastes - jazz/blues/rock used to come together and helped develop my understanding of jazz.

He leaves a fantastic legacy.

RIP.
